English translation
It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever any distress befell the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), these words would come to his blessed tongue: “There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the Noble Throne.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
Supplication too is a form of worship — indeed its very spirit and essence — and so supplication also should be made to Allah alone, for it is Allah alone who accepts prayers. Allah says in the Glorious Qur'an: “Your Lord says: call upon Me, I will answer your prayers.” (Al-Mu'min 60)
After this clear command of the Qur'an, this reality is fully understood: that whoever calls upon anyone other than Allah commits plain, absolute and pure polytheism, because he holds regarding a being other than Allah those attributes which in reality belong to Allah alone. The Absolutely Powerful, the All-Hearing and All-Seeing, and the Administrator of the universe is Allah alone; He alone is the total possessor of all authority; there is no other being in this universe who can hear prayers and has the power, or lack of power, over them.
In the eyes of a materialist, the world and human life are like a lifeless machine in which the various parts of causes and factors work on their own like blind forces, and no unseen being's will is at work in these parts. Contrary to this, a Muslim who has faith in Allah believes that, however the various forces of nature may operate under the law of nature, the results of these causes are arranged solely and only by the will of Allah. Therefore the correct attitude is that, along with providing means and resources, one should also seek the help of Allah. The clear difference between these two outlooks is before us: when a materialist sees that he has at hand every kind of means to which he can turn, he takes the support of those very means — though that is no support at all. In contrast, a believer, whose real support is his faith in Allah, does provide means and resources under the command of his Lord to achieve his goal, spends his full strength to reach the desired destination, and along with that also seeks the help of Allah and prays to Him that he may attain success in his objective and that his spoiled affair may be set right.
This faith teaches man, along with the lofty degrees of self-respect and dignity, also to spread his hands only before Allah; those in whom hopes are placed are themselves needy — they are not creators but creatures, and, like us, servants of the One Lord. Complete faith in Allah, and spreading one's hands only before Him, awakens in man humility, submissiveness, self-respect and dignity. From this it becomes known that he is helpless and needy before the power of Allah, that it is by Allah's favour alone that he obtains everything, that nothing can be obtained from anyone besides Him, and that he does not despair in any state — because the support of Allah remains in every condition, the mercy of Allah encompasses everything, and its hold is the strongest of all supports. From that Pure Being there is never any place for fear, grief or sorrow. May Allah grant us all, with complete faith, the ability to place our trust in Allah alone. Amin!
