English translation
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “I declare a sanctuary the land lying between the sides of the two mountains of Madina (that is, I proclaim its inviolability and command) that its thorny trees are not to be cut and the game living within it is not to be hunted. For the people of Madina (who dwell in it) it is better (that is, residence in Madina guarantees the good of this world and the next), provided they know (its good and benefit, and so do not abandon residence in this city, nor leave it for anywhere else in pursuit of the ease and comfort of this world and the Hereafter). Whoever leaves this city out of aversion (that is, without need), Allah will settle in his place another who is better than him (meaning that leaving Madina out of aversion will not harm Madina but will indeed benefit it, for someone better than that person will come and settle in his place — though leaving Madina out of genuine need and compulsion is not included in this ruling). And whoever remains steadfast amid the hardships, toils and afflictions of Madina (that is, is patient through its every strait and distress), for him I will intercede on the Day of Resurrection” — or he said, “I will be a witness for his (obedience).” (Muslim)

While this noble hadith carries glad tidings for the dwellers of Madina of the supreme blessing of a good end, it also contains a warning that the believer must keep giving thanks for the immense blessing of residing in the two Sacred Precincts (that is, Makka the Ennobled and Madina the Illuminated), remain patient through its every hardship and calamity, and not turn away from the good of these sacred cities — not fixing his gaze on the outward blessings and comforts of other places, for the real blessing and the real comfort is the blessing of the Hereafter and the comfort of that abode.

By intercession in this hadith is meant that his shortcomings and faults be forgiven and he be pardoned, and a testimony to his faith and righteous deeds and to the fact that this servant, patiently enduring hardship upon hardship, remained resident in Madina itself.
