English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not turn your houses into graveyards. (That is, just as the dead in graveyards do not remember Allah or recite the Qur'an, so that the atmosphere of graveyards is empty of the lights and traces of remembrance and recitation — do not make your houses like that, but keep them filled with remembrance and recitation.) And Satan cannot enter a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited (in particular)." (Tirmidhi)
In this hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that just as the dead lie in the graveyard with no power to perform any deed, likewise houses in which no voluntary prayer or recitation of the Qur'an is observed become like a graveyard and their inmates like the dead within it. The Prophet ﷺ then said that Satan flees from the house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited. This means that the recitation of the Holy Qur'an — and Surah al-Baqarah in particular — not only opens the doors of mercy and blessing in that house, but also has the further benefit that such a house is protected from the evil of Satan and the shadow of his deception and cunning. Recitation of the Qur'an is generally a source of mercy and blessing, but Surah al-Baqarah was mentioned especially here because this surah contains many of the names and commands of Allah, the Lord of Might.
Surah al-Baqarah is the longest surah of the Qur'an, and in terms of revelation it is among the early surahs of the Madinan period. It is also called Sanam al-Qur'an and Dhurwat al-Qur'an — sanam and dhurwah referring to the highest and most excellent part of anything. According to some scholars, Surah al-Baqarah contains a thousand commands, a thousand prohibitions, a thousand points of wisdom, and a thousand reports and accounts.
The fundamental principles and beliefs of Islam and the rulings of the Sharia are set out in this surah in more detail than in any other surah of the Qur'an; it is probably for this feature that it was placed foremost in the Qur'an, and probably for this same distinction that it was called Sanam al-Qur'an in the hadith. At the beginning of this surah are the basic principles of faith — Tawhid, Prophethood, and the Hereafter — and between them the fundamentals of religious life: worship, dealings, social conduct, morals, and the reform of the outward and the inward, together with related guidance; and at the end of the surah faith is set out in detail.
In terms of its subjects and issues too this surah holds a special distinction. This may be gauged from the fact that a personage such as Umar al-Faruq the Great (RA) took twelve years to learn Surah al-Baqarah together with its exegesis, and Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) took eight years to learn this surah. May Allah grant us all the ability to recite the Qur'an abundantly, to understand it, and to act upon it. Ameen!
