English translation
Abū Saʿīd (RA) said: We were discussing the Dajjāl when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and said: "Shall I not tell you of what I fear for you more than the Dajjāl?" We said: Certainly, O Messenger of Allah! He said: "Hidden shirk — that a man stands to pray and prolongs his prayer because he sees someone watching him." (Ibn Mājah)
This world in which we live, and in which we have been given the chance to act, is the world of the outward. The reach of our senses and our thinking is limited here to the outward and to appearances — that is, we can form a good or bad opinion of a person only by observing their outward conduct, and we deal with them on that basis. We are unable to uncover what lies beyond outward deeds: people's intentions, the secrets of their hearts, and what their breasts conceal. But in the Hereafter the One who judges is Allah, the Knower of all that is hidden, and there His judgement will be according to intentions and the resolves of the heart.
Allah Almighty says: "They were commanded only to worship Allah with sincere devotion to Him, turning wholly to Him, and to establish prayer and give zakat — and that is the true religion." (Al-Bayyinah 98:5)
The essence of this hadith is that Allah sees the intention along with the deed, and the inward along with the outward. Whoever offers prayer with great humility and devotion only so that people will praise their piety — according to this hadith, such a prayer holds no value with Allah; rather, on the Day of Resurrection this show-off worship will become a burden and a cause of ruin for them. May Allah grant us all the ability to do every deed with a sincere intention. Ameen!
