English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ص said: “Allah has said: there are three whom I will oppose on the Day of Resurrection: (1) a man who gave his word in My name and then broke it (did not fulfil it); (2) a man who sold a free person and consumed the price; and (3) a man who hired a labourer, took full work from him, and did not pay him his wages.” (Bukhari)
In this noble hadith the Messenger of Allah ص identified three kinds of people who will be a special target of Allah’s fury and wrath on the Day of Resurrection. The first is the one who makes a covenant or agreement in the name of Allah — that is, by swearing an oath by Him — and then breaks it. In general, keeping one’s covenants and agreements is in every case a necessary thing, for a person’s nobility and humanity demand that he fulfil whatever he promises; to end an agreement without excuse is both contrary to human honour and an affront to humanity. But if an agreement is made in the name of Allah, then fulfilling it becomes all the more necessary. Therefore, whoever, after making a covenant in the name of Allah, violates it deserves a severe scourge and, rightly, the wrath of Allah.
The second person is one who sells any man, woman, boy or girl who is not, by the rules of the Shari'ah, a lawful bondsman (slave); this is forbidden, and its price too is forbidden. Many people sell their own daughters — a custom that exists in some regions — and many people, in times of famine, sell their own children or the children of others; all of this is forbidden. What greater affront to human dignity can there be than that a person should turn another free human being like himself into a marketable commodity and buy and sell him? So such a person too will have to suffer punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
The third person is one who engages a labourer to complete some task of his, and after getting his work done in full does not pay him his wage. This is an utterly blameworthy act. A person’s labour is a precious asset of his life; to obtain it and then not give him his wage is against the way of humanity. What an injustice it is that a poor man should toil at another’s place, sweating blood to fill his belly, and then not be given the wage of his toil.
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah ص said: “Give the labourer his wage before his sweat dries.” (Ibn Majah)
This means that one should be prompt in paying the labourer’s wage; when the work is complete and finished, pay the wage at once; do not delay and procrastinate, do not put it off to tomorrow, and do not needlessly harass and trouble him with “morning and evening.” So, concerning the one who does not pay a labourer his wage, Allah has given this warning: such a person will certainly be punished on the Day of Resurrection for this injustice to a fellow human being.
Just as it is a grave sin to withhold a labourer’s wage after taking work from him, or not to pay it in full, or to delay its payment without reason, so too it is incumbent upon the labourer to complete the work and give the full time. Many people take their full salary and wage but do not complete the work, or do not do it properly, or do not give the full time; those who do so likewise embroil themselves in the calamity of usurping the rights of Allah’s servants. Therefore it is incumbent upon every employee and labourer not to commit a sinful act, and to carry out properly and fully the work entrusted to him.
