English translation
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Noble Messenger ص said: “Performing Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj,” or (the narrator is uncertain, he may have said) “equal to performing Hajj with me.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
The season of autumn has ended, and the season of spring has arrived with all its splendour. O children of Tawhid and Risalah! The time has come to awaken from the sleep of heedlessness. This is that very guest of goodness and bounty for whom, for the past eleven months, the longings of the people of faith have been stretching in eagerness. What can be said of the virtues and merits of this sacred guest, of the glory of its worth, its rank, its honour and reverence! This is that sacred guest who has brought with it a treasure of mercies and a store of jewels. These gifts are for those fortunate people who welcome it and fulfil the duties of hospitality; while those who are utterly unfortunate and short-sighted lose, while sitting at home, the priceless gifts that were within their reach.
O friends! This is that blessed guest whose good things and blessings are far greater than this. This is that same venerable guest who has come as a means of salvation and a cause of eternal life for us sinners. This is that precious guest who removes one from misguidance and brings one to the Straight Path, who takes the yoke of satanic misguidance off the necks and sets the crown of faith upon the heads.
In this blessed month, throughout the whole world the descent of Allah’s mercies and blessings begins and a spiritual state settles over everything — Muslims, in whatever land they may be, delight in the fasts, in the Tarawih at night, and in the last ten days in the pleasures of i'tikaf as the beloved servants of Allah, and every Muslim experiences a state of joy — yet the state and spectacle of the blessings and mercies of Ramadan al-Mubarak at the Sanctuary of the House of Allah and the Sanctuary of the Prophet’s Mosque ص and the sacred Tomb ص can be gauged only by the one whom Allah grants that felicity.
Among the acts of worship that should especially be performed in this blessed month is Umrah, because performing Umrah in Ramadan earns a reward equal to Hajj. Therefore, in this blessed month, if someone has the means for it, he should certainly perform Umrah, so that he is not deprived of a reward equal to Hajj, or equal to performing Hajj with the Messenger of Allah ص. Along with this, it should also be made clear in one’s mind that this does not mean that the obligation of Hajj is thereby discharged and that after it there will be no need for it.
