Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it (while fasting), Allah has no need that he should give up his food and drink (by keeping the fast).” (Bukhari)

The month of Ramadan al-Mubarak is, in the Islamic Sacred Law, the month of fasting. The true aim and purpose of fasting is that a person be adorned and beautified with the qualities of taqwa (God-consciousness); it is through this taqwa that a person attains nearness to Allah. Taqwa is the name of a state of the heart which, through the certainty that Allah is ever present and watching, produces in the heart a keen unease between good and evil, an inclination towards good and an aversion to evil. This taqwa brings a person into Allah’s firm handhold and also gathers abundant good. Allah, exalted is He, says:

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwa (God-consciousness).” (al-Baqarah 2:183)

This noble verse establishes both the obligation of fasting and its purpose. Thus the command of fasting and its aim and purpose become known to us through the word “tattaqun”: that is, the basic aim of fasting is that we become people of taqwa, and that there develop within us such a disposition that we have complete mastery and rule over the self — that we are the ones it follows and it is our follower, that we are its ruler and it becomes our subject. In the terminology of the Sacred Law, such a person guards the self from everything (that harms) the Hereafter and from the causes of ruin — who protects his self from polytheism and innovations, from disobedience and sin, and thereby attains lasting deliverance from the punishment of Allah, and inclines towards the truth and abandons greed and craving.

Fasting has a great role in attaining taqwa and abstinence, because through fasting there develops the quality of keeping the desires of the self under control, which is the foundation of taqwa. The demand of (human) nature is that a person’s intellect should always dominate and hold sway over his self; but sometimes, on account of human urges, his self comes to dominate his intellect. For this reason, in the religion of Islam, fasting has been made obligatory for the reform of the inner self and the purity of the heart, and it has been established as one of the principles of the religion. From this it becomes clear that a special aim of the month of Ramadan al-Mubarak is to stir up within a person the feelings of Islam, faith, peace and security. In this sacred month a person, passing of his own accord through the training hours of fasting, awakens within himself spiritual sensibilities and humane states, and makes himself fit to keep firm and strong, throughout the year, his bond of faith and Islam with the creation of Allah.

Taqwa is that very essence and sought-after subtle thing which always keeps a person far from evil, which increases the light of faith; and the one within whom this quality is produced — Allah is the Protector and Helper of his deliverance and forgiveness. Fasting does not mean that a person merely stays hungry and thirsty from dawn to dusk; rather the true aim of fasting is that, just as we deprive our stomach of food and drink, so too we should keep the five senses — the eye, nose, ear, tongue and so on — safe from every disobedience and vain thing. If we truly fulfil the right of fasting, then we can attain countless pleasures of Allah; otherwise we shall be deprived of the true benefit of such a fast. The perfect faster is only the one who fasts while (observing) the commands and obedience of the Qur’an and Hadith.

Come, let us all resolve that in these fasts we shall strive to improve ourselves and give up our heedless ways; and if we are true to our pledge, then Allah will surely help us.
