English translation
Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The thing that distinguishes between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is the eating of the pre-dawn meal (suhur).” (Muslim)
Before the time of the fast begins — that is, before the true dawn (subh sadiq) — a person eats and drinks something so that his body may gain some strength in the state of fasting; this, in the terminology (of the Law), is called making suhur or eating the pre-dawn meal. It is not merely permissible but is desired and approved in the Sacred Law. It is a bounty and favour of Allah that, through the blessing of fasting, He has made for us this meal — which is called suhur — a source of reward for the ummah, and Muslims are given reward for it too. In many hadiths its command is given, and the excellence, reward and benefits of eating it have also been explained.
Fasting is such an act of worship whose reality is to leave off eating, drinking and the like, with the intention of fasting, during a specified time. It is therefore obvious that its delimitation can only be by some positive thing — and that is eating and drinking. Hence it was necessary that at its beginning too there be some act of eating and drinking, so that it may be evident that with this meal (suhur) the fast begins and with the other meal (iftar) it ends. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, on many occasions, encouraged eating the suhur for the fast — so much so that in one hadith he said: even if there be nothing else, then eat but a single date, or drink but a single sip of water.
For this reason the fasting should take special care over this suhur, so that comfort, benefit, and a free reward may be attained. How wondrous a matter it is that in eating the suhur there is the servant’s own benefit, yet Allah has placed in it, for the ummah of His beloved Prophet ﷺ, reward as well. Eating the suhur produces an attachment to worship, because hunger often gives rise to ill-temper and fatigue. The reward of the fast itself is one thing for the fasting person, but the reward of taking the suhur in order to keep the fast is over and above that.
In this noble hadith it is pointed out that it is this very suhur that distinguishes between the fasting of the People of the Book — that is, the Jews and Christians — and the fasting of the Muslims. Among the People of the Book, eating after sleeping at night was forbidden; likewise among the Muslims too, in the beginning of Islam, this was the ruling — but later Allah, showing special favour to the ummah of Muhammad ﷺ, not only made it lawful but sent down upon it reward and His mercies too.
The blessings of the suhur are on various grounds: following the Sunnah; and opposing the People of the Book — for they do not eat the suhur, and we are commanded to oppose them as far as possible, and from this the opposition of the People of the Book results, which is a means of giving thanks for this great bounty; moreover, in worship a zeal, eagerness, increase, and turning towards Allah is kept awake. How great is Allah’s favour, that He has made even the suhur a means of reward and blessing for us! Alas, some people, in the nights of Ramadan, stay awake without need until late, and out of laziness are deprived of the excellence of the suhur, and along with that they also miss the Fajr prayer in this blessed month.
The time of suhur is especially (a time) for repentance, intimate supplication, and the acceptance of prayers; through the suhur one is granted the enabling grace of supplication. Why should such a time not be taken advantage of? In view of such excellence and blessing of the suhur, we should take full care of it. Islam is the religion of (human) nature; the teaching of Islam is for the ease and betterment of man; there is no command of Islam that harms human beings.
