English translation
It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Aisha as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her): “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf regularly during the last ten days of Ramadan, until Allah took him (in death); then after him his pure wives continued to observe i'tikaf.”
I'tikaf is among the acts of Ramadan, and especially of its last ten days. In the terminology of the Sharia, i'tikaf means that, for the sake of Allah's pleasure and with the intention of i'tikaf, a person retreats to the House of Allah (the mosque), cuts off contact with everyone, and — apart from all others, in solitude — occupies himself with the worship and remembrance of Allah.
For the training and elevation of the soul, and to make it prevail over the carnal urges, the fasts of the whole month of Ramadan were made obligatory upon the entire Ummah: as if, to make the angelic nature dominant and the animal nature subdued within oneself, this much striving and this much sacrifice of carnal desire has been made binding upon every Muslim — that throughout this honoured and sacred month, in obedience to Allah's command and with the intention of worshipping Him, he neither eats nor drinks by day, nor is intimate with his wife, and along with that abstains from every sin, indeed even from idle talk, passing the whole month under these restrictions. This is the public and obligatory course of spiritual training and purification in Ramadan; and beyond it, to develop a special connection and affinity with Allah, i'tikaf was prescribed. In this i'tikaf the servant of Allah cuts himself off from everyone and everything and falls at the threshold of his Master, as if at His very feet — remembering Him, absorbed in His thought, glorifying and sanctifying Him, turning to Him in repentance and seeking forgiveness, ashamed of his sins and shortcomings, begging mercy and forgiveness from the Merciful and Generous Master, seeking His pleasure and nearness. In this state his days pass and in this state his nights — and clearly, what greater good fortune could there be for any servant?
The scholars have mentioned many wisdoms of i'tikaf: that when the one in retreat stays in the mosque at all times, every prayer is offered in congregation, and he is saved from other idle and futile activities that cannot occur in the mosque. Moreover, when a person separates himself from all worldly affairs and carnal desires and, for some days, remains constantly occupied in the worship and remembrance of Allah, the love of Allah and a tranquillity and light are produced in his heart and mind. Likewise, when for a period he keeps away from futile deeds and idle talk, and the remembrance of Allah stays fresh in his heart at all times, he learns the lesson that a servant should, throughout his whole life, keep away from evil in this way, keep his self under control, and keep his heart alive with the remembrance of Allah. One of the greatest benefits and aims of i'tikaf is the attainment of Laylat al-Qadr.
There are five nights in the last ten days in which Laylat al-Qadr may fall — glory be to Allah! It brought those secluded in the mosques there in search of it. There is a wonderful wisdom in the date of Laylat al-Qadr not being fixed: the intention was that people keep vigil across the five nights. And glory be to Allah, what balance there is in this — that one is not made to keep vigil for five consecutive nights; rather one night is spent in vigil and one night in sleep, and even in that sleep the reward of keeping vigil is granted — for when sleep becomes the means of keeping vigil, and that vigil is a means of worship, and it was undertaken with the very intention of worship, then why would there be no reward in it?
During i'tikaf it is best and most virtuous for the one in retreat to spend his time in recitation of the Holy Qur'an and of hadith, in remembrance and supplication, or in the study of religious books; and he should, as far as possible, avoid idle and futile talk. May Allah grant us all the ability to perform this act of worship. Ameen!
