English translation
A man of the tribe of Banu Sulaym (a Companion) reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, counting on his hand: “Tasbih (SubhanAllah) fills half the scale, and Alhamdulillah fills it completely, and the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) fills all that is between the heaven and the earth; fasting is half of patience, and purity is half of faith.”
In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ conveyed several important points to the Ummah. First he ﷺ spoke about the words of remembrance (adhkar): remembrance is the nourishment and life-source of the hearts of the people of Allah; without it their bodies become graves for those hearts, and it is through remembrance that the world of their hearts is kept alive — were the world of the heart to be emptied of it, it would become an utter wasteland. The remembrance of Allah is the very path and door that stands open between Allah, the Majestic, and His servant, through which the servant can reach His exalted court; and when the servant becomes heedless of the remembrance of Allah, this door closes.
Just as Allah has illuminated seeing eyes with light and sight, so too He has adorned remembering tongues with remembrance. Therefore a tongue heedless of Allah's remembrance is like an eye deprived of sight, like an ear that has lost the ability to hear, and like a hand that has become paralysed and useless. In many places in the Qur'an, Allah has spoken concerning His remembrance; in one place Allah addresses His servants thus:
“O My servants! Remember Me, and I will remember you; and be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.” (al-Baqarah — 152)
Glory be to Allah! What greater good fortune and success can there be for a servant than that the Creator and Master of the entire universe should remember him and keep him in mind?
In the blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that saying SubhanAllah is such an act of proclaiming the greatness and supremacy of Allah that it suffices to fill half the scale of deeds — but this proclamation should be from a sincere heart. A sincere-hearted acknowledgement of Allah's greatness can transform a person's life, so why then would his scale not be filled with good deeds? Saying Alhamdulillah means praising and extolling Allah; the life that consists of the glorification and praise of Allah is the one that can be called a complete life, so it is natural that the scale of deeds is filled through glorification and praise. As for the Takbir — saying Allahu Akbar — those who possess true hearing hear the echo of the Takbir everywhere in the universe, in the earth and in the heavens; every particle of the earth and sky is narrating the tale of Allah's majesty and greatness, so that when someone sings the anthem of Allah's greatness, every particle of the heavens and earth joins him, as if the sound of his instrument becomes harmonised with the sound of the instrument of the whole universe.
Then the blessed hadith mentions patience. We can describe the whole life of a believer as patience: the believer is bound by a code of life, his true orientation is toward success in the Hereafter, and he lives in this world in order to be actively journeying in the path of Allah — for which great patience is needed. Without patience a person can neither take a single step in Allah's path, nor can his character and conduct be built. In this hadith fasting is called half of patience, meaning that whoever has kept the fast has gained the training of patience and steadfastness; now he must benefit from it throughout his whole life and mould his entire life into the pattern of patience. The day his life is cast in the mould of patience, we can say he has perfected his patience — then he will possess not half of patience but complete patience.
There is a deep link and connection between patience and fasting: the very notion of fasting brings the notion of patience to mind, and reveals the reality that both its beginning and its end are patience. One who is not acquainted with patience cannot be a true faster, and one who becomes a true faster has absorbed within himself the reality of patience and steadfastness. Fasting and patience are deeds whose recompense and reward are also boundless; the greatest display of Allah's generosity is in the reward of these two acts. Concerning fasting, as comes in the hadith, Allah says, “I Myself shall be its reward”; and concerning patience Allah says:
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure.” (az-Zumar — 10)
