English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Everything has a zakat (a due that purifies it), and the zakat of the body is fasting.”
In the system of the religion, the pillars of Islam — prayer, fasting, Hajj, and zakat — hold great importance. In both their outward and inward aspects, these pillars are connected directly to Allah. The pillars of Islam have a major role in awakening the spirit of servitude within a person and creating a taste for devotion; it is upon these very pillars of Islam that the whole edifice of the religion truly stands.
The religion of Islam is in reality another name for fulfilling the rights of both Allah and His servants. After the rights of Allah, the rights of His servants fall upon us; prayer and zakat remind us of these two categories of rights. By paying zakat a person does not merely discharge an obligation and become free of it; rather, through it his own self is perfected — and perfection and purification are the very basic aim of the commands of the Sharia. What is called wisdom in the religion is nothing other than the training and purification of a person's soul with knowledge and insight. The real purpose of zakat is that a person attain purification through it. Zakat means purity and cleansing; by paying zakat a person is freed from the evil traits of selfishness, miserliness, and greed for wealth, and his soul attains purity and growth. Allah says:
“And [the Fire] will be kept away from the one who fears Allah and gives his wealth to others in order to attain purity.” (al-Layl, 17–18)
That is, whoever spends his wealth in accordance with Allah's command, so that his soul and his wealth too become pure — that person will be kept far from Hell and will enter Paradise.
By paying zakat a person's soul is purified and his wealth too becomes pure; but if he is selfish, not paying out of the wealth Allah has bestowed the right due to Allah's servants, then his wealth remains impure and his soul too remains impure. For the human soul, what could be a matter of greater suffocation and impurity than miserliness, ingratitude, and selfishness? Zakat is the solution to the problem of those who are poor and needy. It is the duty of Muslims to help their brother, so that no brother remains naked, hungry, and humiliated — it must not be that the rich stay absorbed in their own ease and comfort while there is none to look after the orphans, the needy, and the widows of the community. They should feel that in their wealth there is also a right of other needy people.
This blessed hadith too makes known the basic aim of zakat, namely the purification of the self. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared fasting to be the zakat of the body; in reality fasting is itself an act of self-purification. Every person of knowledge knows the standing that the month of Ramadan holds in the purification and training of the human self: this compulsory training programme of thirty (30) fasts comes every year so that one may fill one's lap, and for the reform and purification of the self. In this way it also becomes clear of itself how the pillars of Islam are linked to one another.
Since the meaning of zakat is purity and cleansing, which cleans and purifies a person's wealth, likewise the zakat of the body — that is, the physical health and soundness of the body, and its spiritual purity and cleanliness — is achieved through fasting. For although, on account of fasting, some part of the body's strength and power outwardly diminishes and it seems weakened, in reality fasting becomes a means of blessing and increase in the body's growth, health, and soundness; and moreover, through it the body is purified of sins.
