Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA) reported that on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (the day of sacrifice) the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go out to the Eid ground and, first of all, begin with the prayer. Then, having finished the prayer, he would stand facing the people, while the people remained seated in their rows. He ﷺ would then admonish and counsel them, give directions, and issue commands; and if he had to dispatch a military detachment somewhere he would send it off, or if there was some particular order to give, he would give that too, and then he would return. (Bukhari and Muslim)

It is the mark of a Muslim that on both occasions — joy and grief — he follows the command of Allah and His Prophet ﷺ. Joy cannot lead him astray, nor can occasions of grief and pain drag him away from the straight path. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are two days of joy for Muslims, and these two days are the best of days for them.
In this blessed hadith the Prophet ﷺ has set before the Ummah the natural way of observing an Islamic festival. Even on a festival day the Prophet ﷺ and the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) did not become heedless of their responsibilities, nor did they indulge in any kind of idle amusement. The Prophet ﷺ would explain to the people the greatness and merits of reward and warn them against sins, so that people would not, absorbed in the joys and delights of the day, become heedless of obedience and fall into sin. He would enjoin upon them taqwa — that is, God-consciousness and abstinence. The day of Eid is a day of joy and happiness for Muslims. By fasting a whole continuous month in Ramadan Muslims fulfil the command of Allah, and on the day of Eid they hope that Allah will surely accept their deeds and, cleansing them of every kind of evil, grant them a pure life. The day of Eid holds out the hope of joy and success in the Hereafter. The joy of Eid is no ordinary joy; it is a sign of the life of Muslims and of their communal and national existence, and it grants the Muslim Ummah a distinctive dignity among the other nations of the world. In whatever ways the world has devised for celebrating, the basic consideration has been that they should be a means of pleasure and delight for a person; and for this purpose the world has generally relied, from the very cradle of misguidance and vulgarity, only on melody, colour, and song and music. Islam, by contrast, taught a way of celebrating Eid that is not merely free of every kind of evil and defect, but is also the highest manifestation of beauty, truthfulness, purity, and delight and joy. No better or more complete way of expressing joy and happiness is possible. The way taught by Islam is a manifestation of the highest civilisation; for human life Islam has chosen only that emblem which accords with human nature and is a sign of a healthy life.
The way Islam has taught for celebrating Eid beautifully expresses the bond that exists between Allah and His servant. On Eid, joy is expressed especially through the prayer and the takbir. Besides being an expression of happiness, this is also an offering of thanks by the servant before Allah. In the sight of the believer, the most beloved and comforting state is that in which his bond with Allah is expressed most completely; and clearly, what state can surpass standing, bowing, and prostrating in possessing this quality?
This hadith also shows that, after the prayer and the sermon, the Prophet ﷺ would issue — right there at the Eid ground — whatever commands he had to give concerning the people's affairs. Armies and detachments of mujahidin for the exaltation of the word of truth were also organised, and they would be dismissed and sent off from there.
