Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that my dear friend and beloved ﷺ counselled me: "Do not associate anything as a partner with Allah, even if you are cut to pieces and roasted in fire. And beware — never deliberately abandon the prayer, for whoever deliberately abandons the prayer has forfeited the protection that Allah has pledged to His loyal and believing servants. And beware — never drink wine, for it is the key to every evil." (Ibn Majah)

In this hadith the Master of both worlds ﷺ taught three fundamental principles of religion. The first and foremost is not to commit shirk (associating partners with Allah) in even the most difficult of circumstances, because shirk is utterly detestable to Allah, as Allah says: "Indeed, Allah does not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives anything less than that for whom He wills." (al-Nisa 4:48) This means that for sins from which a believer dies without repenting, Allah — if He wills for someone — may forgive without any punishment, may punish some and then forgive them, and may forgive many through the intercession of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; but in the case of shirk there is no forgiveness, for Allah has forbidden Paradise to the one who associates partners with Him. The second matter the Prophet ﷺ mentioned concerns prayer. Prayer is the most fundamental and important pillar of religion; it is the very line that distinguishes a Muslim from a disbeliever. Prayer is obligatory upon every sane, adult Muslim in every state — whether man or woman, young or old, in peace or on the battlefield, in health or sickness, king or pauper, resident or traveller — there is no exemption from its obligation. By abandoning the obligatory prayer, a person steps out of the covenant of Islam because of rebellion against a major command and fundamental law of Islam; that is why whoever abandons the prayer forfeits the protection of Allah. The third matter the Prophet ﷺ forbade was wine, because wine dulls a person's heart, mind and intellect and is a thing that opens the door to evils — which is why it is called the key to every evil. May Allah make all Muslims guardians of the prayer with sound faith, and grant them the ability to abstain from all major and minor sins. Amin!
