English translation
Narrated Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and, during it, utters no obscene or indecent speech (rafath) and commits no disobedience to Allah (fisq), returns from his Hajj as free of sins as the day his mother gave birth to him." (Bukhari and Muslim)

In this blessed hadith the Master of both worlds ﷺ has given the community the great virtue of Hajj and a most important glad tiding: that whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah — that is, his purpose is solely Allah's pleasure and good will and solely the fulfilment of His command, with no motive of showing off or being seen — and along with it abstains from the few things to which the Prophet ﷺ pointed, returns from Hajj as pure and clean of sins as he was when he was born pure and clean from his mother's womb.

In general, every good deed has the property that through it a person's sins are forgiven and the evil effects of sins are removed from hearts, a person's character is set right, and he attains the wealth of purity and inner cleanliness; but this property is found in Hajj to a special degree. Hajj is a great act of worship; if performed with all its etiquettes and conditions, it truly transforms a person's life and suffices to mould him in goodness, piety and God-consciousness.

"Rafath" literally means sexual intercourse; here it refers to obscene speech, indecency and lewdness, and desiring sexual relations with one's wife. Since intercourse with one's wife is forbidden during Hajj, talking and joking with her on this subject is likewise disliked. "Fisq" refers to disobedience to Allah and quarrelling with people; abstaining from these is especially necessary during the days of Hajj. Allah, the Exalted, says: "So whoever undertakes the Hajj in these (months) must abstain from intimacy with his wife, and from sin, and from quarrelling and disputing." (al-Baqarah 197)

The need for such guidance at Hajj is because it is a very large gathering where men and women of every kind perform Hajj; on this occasion there is a greater need to guard the gaze and keep one's thoughts pure. Thus at the Farewell Pilgrimage, on the Day of Arafah, the Prophet ﷺ drew a young man's particular attention to this, saying: "My son, this is a day on which whoever controls his ears, his gaze and his tongue will be forgiven." (Ahmad and Tabarani)

Nowhere on the face of the earth is there so vast a gathering of the people of Islam — in which people of different countries, races and colours, men and women, old and young, unmarried and married, of every kind assemble — except at the plain of Arafah; so the dangers of the eyes going astray are also very great here. Moreover, in terms of time, place, occasion and moment, no gathering in the world can surpass it in grandeur and blessing. On such an occasion, just as the rank of a good deed is raised, so too the evil of a wrong deed becomes far more intense; therefore it is most necessary to firmly restrain the ears from hearing anything evil, the eyes from looking at anything wrong, the tongue from saying anything false, and the hands and feet from any wrong action. Furthermore, in so large a gathering, if every believer does not have regard for the needs of his brother, quarrels and disputes are bound to arise at the occasion of Hajj; so attention has been specially drawn to this as well.

The virtue of a Hajj performed with the aforementioned restrictions is that a person becomes entirely pure and clean of sins; but this purification is only from those minor sins that relate to the rights of Allah. Otherwise the major sins relating to the rights of Allah, and likewise the sins relating to the rights of fellow human beings (huquq al-'ibad), will not be forgiven without sincere repentance and the discharge of those rights. And Allah, the Exalted, knows best.
