English translation
It is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would go out to the place of Eid prayer on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (the day of sacrifice), and he would begin with the prayer first. Then, after finishing the prayer, he would stand facing the people while they remained seated in their rows, and he would admonish and advise them, give counsel, and issue commands. If he wished to send out an army he would dispatch it, or if there was some particular command to give, he would give that too; then he would return. (Bukhari and Muslim)

It is the honour of a Muslim that on both occasions—joy and grief—he follows the command of Allah and His Prophet Neither can joy lead him astray, nor can occasions of grief and sorrow take him away from the straight path. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are two days of joy for Muslims, and these two days are the best of days for them.

In this blessed hadith, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) presented to the Ummah the natural way of celebrating an Islamic festival. Even on the day of a festival, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) would not become heedless of their responsibilities, nor would they become engrossed in any kind of futile activity. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would explain to the people the greatness and merits of reward and warn them against sins, so that people, absorbed in the joys and pleasures of the day, would not become heedless of obedience and fall into sin. He would advise the people to adopt taqwa, that is, piety. The day of Eid is a day of joy and happiness for Muslims. The joy of Eid is no ordinary joy; it is a symbol of the life of Muslims and of their national and communal existence. The joy of Eid grants the Muslim Ummah a distinctive dignity compared with the other nations of the world. In whatever ways the world has invented to celebrate joy, the basic consideration has been that they provide a person with delight and pleasure; and for this purpose, generally out of misguidance and vulgarity, the world has relied on music, revelry and singing. Whereas the way Islam has taught for celebrating Eid is not merely free of every kind of evil and defect, but is also the highest manifestation of beauty, truthfulness, purity and delight. There can be no better or more complete way of expressing joy and happiness. The way taught by Islam is a manifestation of the highest civilization; Islam has chosen for human life the very practice that accords with human nature and is a sign of a healthy life.

The way Islam has taught for celebrating Eid clearly expresses the relationship that exists between Allah and His servant. On Eid, joy is expressed especially through the prayer and the takbir. Besides being an expression of happiness, this is also an offering of thanks by the servant before Allah. In the eyes of a believer, the most beloved and comforting state is the one in which his relationship with Allah is expressed in its most perfect degree. Clearly, what state can be greater than that of standing, bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud) for possessing this distinction?

This hadith also shows that, after the prayer and the sermon, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would issue—right there at the place of Eid prayer—whatever commands needed to be given regarding the people's affairs. For raising high the word of truth, armies and squads would also be organized, and from there they would be given leave and dispatched.
