English translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “On the Day of Resurrection a very fat, well-built man will come, but in the sight of Allah he will not weigh even as much as the wing of a mosquito.” (Then the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,) “Recite this verse: ‘So We shall assign no weight to them on the Day of Resurrection.’” (Muslim)
In this hadith the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has stated a most fundamental truth. In the eyes of the outwardly-minded, honour and worth lie in a person being prosperous, healthy and strong in his outward standing; but in the sight of reality, the standard of honour and dignity is something quite different. A man may, in his outward form, be of great bulk, physique, height and stature; it is possible that ordinary eyes are impressed by him, but this is not enough for his greatness, honour and majesty. Thus a person may come on the Day of Resurrection with a great body as regards his outward form, but in the sight of Allah Almighty he will have no worth—in the sight of Allah Almighty he will not weigh even as much as the wing of a mosquito. This is because, in the sight of Allah Almighty, the standard of honour is good morals and deeds, not worldly rank and pomp and bodily health and strength. This is why a person devoid of good morals and deeds will be disgraced and humiliated in the Hereafter. In the sight of Allah, only those will be deemed deserving of honour and nobility who are truly deserving of it—those in whose lives the thing worth regarding was not wealth and riches and beauty and complexion, but rather those who always kept faith and noble character before their eyes; whom no thing of the world could bring low from the loftiness of their gaze; for whom no other thing of the world could become an object of attraction in comparison with faith and noble character.
What is the standard of honour? We can easily understand this in the light of the clear teachings of Islam; but for those who have no regard for the teachings of Islam, or in whose hearts Islam has not yet entered, it is extremely difficult to become acquainted with the true reality of honour and its worth. The result of this is that the search for honour takes them to various places, yet they remain deprived of it—like the person who seeks the heart’s contentment and ease in wealth, but for whom this thing remains forever out of reach.
In the sight of reality, the standard of honour is not what worldly-minded people have taken to be the real standard of honour. In one narration it is stated: “Allah has never made ignorance a cause of honour for anyone, nor has He ever disgraced anyone on account of oppression and injustice.” (Al-Hadith)
In another hadith the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said thus: “Whoever desires the honour of the Hereafter should abandon the adornment of the world—that is, he should not be a worshipper of worldly adornment, nor enamoured of it.”
Honour and nobility are, in reality, a trust from Allah. It is man’s duty to save himself from being disgraced. Once the standard of honour and disgrace is understood, it easily becomes clear that man is himself responsible for his own honour and disgrace. Whatever course a person adopts in his life, as a result of it he either increases his honour or takes himself towards degradation and makes himself disgraced. In the world, a believer’s insight fully perceives who is honoured and who is disgraced; and since in the world of the Hereafter the realities will be disclosed, there it will become manifest to all who made a profitable bargain and who suffered loss. At the end of the hadith, by way of reference, a verse of the Qur’an has also been presented: that on the Day of Resurrection no weight will be established for those who disobeyed Allah; on that day they will be weightless, and nothing will fall to their lot but disgrace and humiliation. The thing that could have given them weight on that day was the weight of morals and character, from which they turned heedlessly away while passing their lives. In reality they were weightless and dead in the world too, and in the Hereafter also they will be adjudged weightless; the standing of such people is no more than rubble. In the Qur’an this reality has been made clear in various places. In one place Allah Almighty addresses us thus: “Then, as for one whose scales are heavy, he will be in a pleasant life; and as for one whose scales are light, his abode will be the Abyss (Hawiyah). And what will make you know what it is? A blazing Fire.” (Al-Qari‘ah 6–11)
In this hadith there is a great lesson for us. We should keep taking stock of ourselves: to what extent our religion and faith have made us weighty in respect of our morals, character, and thought and reflection. If, despite performing the outward acts and rituals of the religion, we could not rise at all in respect of our personality but rather remained in degradation—remaining base instead of becoming noble in disposition—then nothing comes of it. Therefore we need to raise ourselves properly to the heights of morals and character, and there is only one means to this: obedience to the Master of both worlds
