English translation
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “There is no child but is born upon the natural disposition (fitrah); then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian, just as an animal is born whole and sound from the belly of another animal — do you find any of them mutilated in the ear or nose? (People cut their ears only later, because of their ignorant customs.)” Then Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you wish, recite [in confirmation] the verse of the Noble Qur’an: “This is the natural disposition (fitrah) of Allah upon which He created mankind. There is no change in the creation of Allah. That is the upright religion.”
Islam is the name of that way of life which man’s own nature (fitrah) itself demands. By sending messengers, Allah reminded people only of the things that their own nature requires. Islam is such a system of thought and action that is entirely in accordance with reason, insight, and our nature. That is why the Noble Qur’an describes Islam with the term “the Straight Path” (Sirat al-Mustaqim). Violating the commands of Islam is in reality opposing one’s own nature and amounts to introducing corruption into Allah’s creation. The things Islam has commanded naturally bring about the perfection of the individual; through them a person’s character is refined and beautified. The things Islam has forbidden are precisely those that disfigure a person’s character. The perfection of the individual and the purification of the soul (tazkiyah) is the very purpose of the Shariah. This is why the Noble Qur’an has made the purification of the soul the ultimate goal. Allah, the Exalted, says: “Successful indeed is the one who purifies it (the soul), and ruined is the one who corrupts it.” (Ash-Shams 9-10)
In this hadith, “fitrah” means Islam, which is why Judaism, Christianity, and Magianism have been mentioned as its opposite. An important truth stated in this hadith is that man comes into the world with a pure nature, whose name is Islam. His nature knows only Allah as its Lord and God, and is familiar with the natural principles of the way of life He has shown. His nature has no affinity with polytheism, disbelief, heresy, and ignorant thoughts and deeds. Man is born with the yearning to seek knowledge of his Lord and with the urge to worship Him. Every child is born upon fitrah and pure monotheism (hanifiyyah); he is upon that sound nature which is entirely free of disbelief and sin. If a person were to remain upon his innate nature, he would have not the slightest hesitation in accepting the teachings of Islam; he would accept them as one accepts a beloved thing he had saved. But what happens is that a corrupt environment and misguided parents distort his nature and turn him toward polytheistic thoughts and deeds. His example is exactly like an animal that its mother bore whole and sound, but which someone has disfigured by cutting off its nose and ears. Man does not come with disbelief, polytheism, atheism, and things contrary to his nature, but falling into misguidance he adopts all those things that are against his nature and the intent of his creation. No one would like to have his ears and nose cut off, or to be lame in the foot and blind in the eyes, yet it is his utmost misfortune that he does not wish to see his nature in its disfigured state, but rather insists that it be left in its corrupted and mutilated condition.
At the end of the hadith, verse 30 of Surah Ar-Rum also confirms the point that everyone’s creation and origin is upon fitrah — that is, upon the religion of Islam and Tawhid. And this creation of Allah is not to be altered; rather, through correct upbringing it should be nurtured so that faith and Tawhid become firmly rooted in children’s hearts and minds. That is, the religion toward which one is commanded to turn wholeheartedly, and which nature demands, is this very religion of Islam.
Man’s natural religion is that he should become a servant of the one Allah, obedient and worshipful; this is exactly what is called Islam. Islam does not harm our nature; it refines and beautifies it. Knowledge of this religion is in reality knowledge of man’s own nature and of the purpose and goal of his life. By adopting an attitude against it in life, man causes irreparable harm to his own nature and his own existence.
