It is narrated from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is not lawful for a person to break off from meeting his brother for more than three days, such that when they come face to face one turns his face one way and the other turns his face another way; and the better of the two is the one who is first to give the greeting of salām." (Abū Dāwūd)

Islam is fully vigilant about the destructive causes of injustice and transgression, and it seeks their remedy before the matter goes too far and turns into enmity. It is very common that people differ from one another in temperament and understanding, and as they keep meeting one another in the arenas of life, both warmth and distance arise, and friction and distress inevitably appear. For this reason Islam has laid down principles to extinguish the resentment and mischief-making in the hearts of Muslims and to let the feelings of mutual love and friendship be nurtured in their hearts. For this very purpose it has forbidden the severing of ties and mutual hostility.

It comes likewise in a narration that it is not lawful for a Muslim to keep away from his brother for more than three days; so whoever kept away from his brother for more than three days and died in that state has entered the Fire. (Reported by Abū Dāwūd and Musnad Aḥmad)
