English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Envy is permissible only in the case of two men: a man to whom Allah has given wealth and then granted him the ability to spend it in the way of truth; and a man to whom Allah has given wisdom, so he judges by it and teaches it (to people)." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Hasad (envy) means to see some blessing in the possession of another and to wish that this blessing should come to oneself and be lost to the other. It is obvious that this is a very evil trait and a matter of utmost baseness of the self. Islam, which is the greatest standard-bearer of morals and purity, does not approve of this immoral and mean trait and commands avoidance of it. In contrast to hasad is ghibtah: ghibtah means to see some blessing in another's possession and to wish that, just as this blessing is with him, may Allah Almighty honour me too with such a blessing. The Shari'ah declares this permissible — but this too is permissible only in good things, such as noble morals and habits, excellent qualities, and virtue and perfection. Thus, the "envy" mentioned in this hadith is ghibtah.

From the hadith it can be well gauged that the state worthy of (this kind of) envy is that of these two men: one whom Allah has given wealth and he is spending it in the way of truth — he is successful; likewise successful is the man whom Allah Almighty has favoured with knowledge and wisdom, and he fulfils its due right, judges rightly, and teaches people knowledge and wisdom.

In one narration Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) drew me to his breast and said: "O Allah, grant him wisdom." In another narration the words are: "Teach him the Book (the Qur'an)." (with reference to Bukhari)

The knowledge of the Holy Qur'an is in reality wisdom itself in its very essence.

What is wisdom (hikmah)? Concerning it, various sayings of the predecessors are found, which in reality explain wisdom from one aspect or another. In its essence, wisdom is a kind of light, insight, or state by which both aspects — the good and the ugly, or good and evil — become clearly manifest. Wisdom is not something acquired by mental effort; rather, this perception and insight are attained entirely by the grace of Allah. It is in reality an inspired perception. Its state is exactly like a person tasting some delicious thing and recognising its taste with his most delicate senses and fully savouring its pleasure. Wisdom is in reality tafaqquh fi'l-din, that is, the name of deep understanding in religion. When this wisdom manifests in a person's words and deeds and in his sphere of knowledge, it is designated by various names, such as exhortation and admonition, gratitude, generosity, chastity, justice, forbearance, and so on. As an example, see in the Holy Qur'an in Surah Luqman the saying of Allah Almighty:

{And We gave Luqman wisdom, [enjoining]: Be grateful to Allah.} (Luqman 12)

Luqman (peace be upon him) was a righteous servant of Allah whom Allah Almighty had granted a distinguished rank in wisdom — that is, intellect, understanding, and religious insight. Someone asked him, "How did you attain this understanding and awareness?" He replied, "By truthfulness, by adopting trustworthiness, and by refraining from useless talk and keeping silent." Further on in this Surah, under this gratitude and wisdom, ten matters are mentioned: the Oneness of God, faith in the Hereafter, prayer, enjoining good, forbidding evil, patience in afflictions, refraining from arrogance and from turning one's face away from people, moderation in gait and pace, and lowering one's voice in speech. Of these, two relate to beliefs; of the remaining eight, four concern resolve and exercising patience and steadfastness in afflictions, and the other four relate to morals.

In reality gratitude is the foundation of faith and the special manifestation of wisdom. In this way we see that wisdom reigns over the whole of life. How truly is this saying of the Holy Qur'an founded upon reality: {And whoever is given wisdom has been given much good.} (Al-Baqarah 269)

There can be no wealth greater than this. In the Hadith it comes concerning wisdom in this way: the real wisdom is to fear Allah Almighty. (Al-Hadith)
