English translation
It is narrated from Uqbah ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Beware of going in to (non-mahram) women (and be very cautious in this matter)." A man asked: "What is your ruling regarding the husband's close relatives (the husband's brother and the like)? (Does the same ruling apply to them?)" He said: "They are death and destruction itself." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Islam is the religion of the natural disposition; all its teachings are entirely in accord with human nature and temperament, and acting upon them is not an impossible task. Islam has not only fully safeguarded man's worldly and otherworldly dignity but has enjoined that he live with honour and dignity. As soon as the honour of a dignified person is impinged upon, Islam's penal law comes into action, giving an exemplary punishment for the offender and glad tidings of the protection of honour for the believer. The Shari'ah ruling of purdah too has been given out of regard for a woman's honour, dignity, and worth; its aim is by no means to place restrictions on women or to make them appear inferior to men. A hadith states: "Women are the equals of men in being human." (from Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah)
No religion or law in the world, no civilisation or society, has given woman the station and rank that Islam has given her. Purdah is the very guardian of a woman's honour, dignity, chastity, modesty, and greatness. Purdah and hijab are entirely in accord with a woman's nature. Among the many forms of corruption in the world, a woman's lack of purdah is a very great cause. A woman may not, adorned and made up, come before any non-mahram except her husband and her mahrams; this is unlawful and forbidden in Islam, and to do so brings punishment upon the woman.
Among the husband's close relatives, his father and his children are mahram for the wife; apart from these, all the husband's relatives — even his own brother — are non-mahram.
In this blessed hadith a most important matter concerning purdah is stated, of which the majority of Muslims are heedless: it is that a woman must observe purdah even from her husband's own brothers and cousins. Because of their closeness they come and go in the house at all times, and countless opportunities for seclusion arise with them. Their moving about the house freely, and meeting and talking informally and unveiled in private and in public, is — according to this saying of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) — extremely dangerous and, as it were, deadly poison for chastity and integrity. Therefore, compared with others, the likelihood of falling into temptation with them is far greater. This is why they have been described as "death" — that is, they are a cause of destruction in the religious sense; or the meaning is that its outcome is death if the two commit a wrong, since in an Islamic state the punishment for it is stoning. Another form of "destruction" may be that if the husband comes to suspect his wife of an affair with someone, in a fit of honour he may kill her or divorce her, and even divorce would make her life wretched. Among the Arabs the word "death" is commonly used when warning of some dangerous thing, just as the Arabs used to say "the lion is death," meaning that to go near a lion is to go into the embrace of death. So one meaning may be: fear being alone with a non-mahram woman as one fears death.
And when purdah is necessary from the husband's younger and elder brothers and the like, why would it not be necessary from the husband's friends? Great carelessness is still being shown in this matter; the dangerous consequences that keep coming to light appear from time to time in the newspapers, yet people still do not understand, and immodesty keeps spreading like a widespread epidemic.
