English translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever." (Muslim)
Allah created this world so that His servants might live in it and, through their righteous deeds, provide for their Hereafter, doing deeds that earn Allah's pleasure and approval. The believer's gaze is always fixed on the Hereafter, and he is ever mindful that he will be held answerable before Allah for his every action on the Day of Judgement, when all his good and evil deeds will be shown to him — as Allah says in the Qur'an: "So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it." (Al-Zalzalah 99:7–8) Thus the believer remains anxious about the reckoning of his deeds and binds himself to keep every act within the limits set by the Shari'ah; because of these restraints the world is no less than a prison for him, in which a prisoner is bound in every way. The disbeliever, by contrast, has no concern for the Hereafter and lives in the world as carefree as one who has reached Paradise. The upshot of this hadith is that the believer's worry and hardship are confined to this world, after which there is nothing but peace for him; while the disbeliever's ease and luxury last only as long as this world, after which, as punishment for his disbelief, a dreadful and endless torment awaits him. This is why the world is a paradise for the disbeliever and a prison for the believer. This hadith is in reality a mirror for the people of faith, in which every believer may see his own face: if his heart's attachment to the world is like that of a prisoner to his prison, he is a complete believer; but if he has given his heart to the world and made it his goal and desire, then this hadith shows that his condition resembles that of a disbeliever. Every believing servant should therefore examine himself and strive to follow fully the Shari'ah of Allah and of the final Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for this is the path of salvation.
