سچی توبہ

Narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Among a nation before you there was a man who had killed ninety-nine (99) of Allah's servants. (Then remorse arose in his heart and he grew anxious about his end and the Hereafter,) so he asked people who was the greatest scholar in the area (so that he could go and learn how he might be forgiven). People told him about a monk (a pious hermit), so he went to him and said, 'I have killed ninety-nine people; can such a man's repentance still be accepted?' The monk said, 'Absolutely not,' so he killed the monk too and completed the count of one hundred (100). (But then the same unease and anxiety returned to his heart,) and he asked some people about a very great scholar; they directed him to a learned man. He came to him and said, 'I have killed one hundred (100) people; can the repentance of such a criminal still be accepted (and can he too be forgiven)?' He said, 'Yes! (Even such a person's repentance can be accepted.) And who is there to stand between a man and repentance? (i.e. no one has the power to prevent his repentance from being accepted.) Go to such-and-such town; there live some devoted worshippers of Allah — go and join them in worship (for Allah's mercy pours down upon that town), and do not return to your own town, for it (your town) is an evil, corrupt place.' So he set out toward the other town, and when he had covered half the distance, death suddenly overtook him. Then the angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed about him. The angels of mercy said, 'This man came repentant and turned his face sincerely toward Allah (so he now deserves mercy).' The angels of punishment said, 'He has done no good deed (and came having killed one hundred people, so he deserves severe punishment).' At that moment an angel (by Allah's command) came in the form of a man, and both groups of angels accepted him as an arbiter. He ruled that the distance to the two towns should be measured (the town of evil and corruption from which he had set out, and the town of Allah's worshippers toward which he was heading), and that he should be counted as belonging to whichever town he was relatively closer to. So it was measured, and he was found to be relatively closer to the town toward which he had intended to go; so the angels of mercy took him into their charge." (Bukhari and Muslim)
