English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Allah has ghayrah (protective honour), and the believer too has ghayrah; and the demand of Allah's ghayrah is that the believer should not do that which Allah has forbidden."

Allah the Exalted has granted man honour and dignity, and it is man's duty to recognise the worth and value of this honour and not to let it be wounded in any way. The sense of ghayrah (protective jealousy) has been placed within man precisely to guard this honour. Those acts by which a person's honour is wounded, Allah has forbidden. Allah does not merely wish that man's existence be protected; rather He also wishes that no blemish should touch his honour — this is Allah's utmost grace and favour. For example, Allah has declared shirk (associating partners with Him) and zina (unlawful intercourse) forbidden. We see that both of these things are against man's self-respect and dignity. Just as immorality and zina are a debasing act, so too shirk is an obscene and shameful act for man. Just as zina strips away a man's dignity, his nobility and his chastity, so too shirk snatches away a man's honour and leaves his standing no better than that of a vagrant and disgraced person. By mentioning shirk and zina together in Surah al-Nur, the Qur'an has indicated that there is no essential difference between shirk and zina; for man there is equal repugnance in both.

From this hadith it is also known that Allah has a very deep connection with His servants. This is why He regards it as against His ghayrah that His servants should be involved in acts unbefitting His own majesty and loftiness; He does not tolerate the disgrace and humiliation of His servant.

In another hadith it comes that Sa'd ibn Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If I were to see a strange man with my wife, I would surely strike him with the sword — not with the flat of the blade (but with its edge). When this reached the Prophet (ﷺ), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Are you astonished at Sa'd's ghayrah? By God, I am more possessed of ghayrah than he, and Allah has more ghayrah than I. It is out of Allah's ghayrah that He has forbidden all shameful deeds, open and hidden; and none is more inclined than Allah to accept excuses, which is why He sent warners and bearers of glad tidings (the Prophets); and none loves praise more than Allah, which is why Allah has promised Paradise." (as reported in Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah is the Master of all beauty and excellence. The progress of man's thought and understanding depends upon his attaining a correct knowledge of Allah. It would be a great misfortune for a person to have knowledge of all matters of the world yet remain ignorant of the attributes of his Lord and of His beauty and perfection. A servant can praise and extol Allah only when he has a correct recognition of his Lord. The guidance Allah has given as to what beliefs and views man should hold and what conduct he should adopt in his life is the clearest proof that Allah's essence is worthy of praise and extolment. Now if a person disobeys Allah's commands, what else can it mean but that he desires for his life commands that are not worthy of our praise — for example, the teaching of shirk, immorality, ignorance, disgrace and lowliness Allah would never give; such teaching can only be from Satan, who is accursed and detestable.

May Allah grant the whole Muslim ummah the true ability to distinguish between the forbidden and the lawful, and protect them from committing every kind of forbidden act, and keep them in His refuge from all the mischief-making of Satan. Ameen.
