English translation
Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that one night he slept at the house of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). When the time came, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) rose (for the Tahajjud prayer), used the tooth-stick (miswak), performed ablution, and then at that time recited these supplicatory verses (from the end of Surah Aal-e-Imran), "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth..." to the end of the Surah. Then he stood for prayer and prayed two rak'ahs in which he greatly prolonged the standing, the bowing and the prostration. Then he returned to his bed and slept (for a little while) until his breathing became audible. After that he did the same thing three (more) times (that is, three times he slept a little, then rose, used the miswak, performed ablution, and prayed two rak'ahs with prolonged standing, bowing and prostration). In this way he prayed (besides the first two rak'ahs) six rak'ahs, and each time he rose he would use the miswak and perform ablution and recite these verses from the end of Aal-e-Imran; then he prayed three rak'ahs of Witr.
From this noble hadith, while we learn of the Prophet's (ﷺ) prolonged standing, bowing and prostration in the Tahajjud prayer and his performance of Witr thereafter, we also learn well of the excellence of the final verses of Surah Aal-e-Imran.
Concerning the occasion of revelation of this verse of Surah Aal-e-Imran, "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth...", Ibn Hibban in his Sahih and the hadith-scholar Ibn Asakir in his Tarikh have narrated that Ata ibn Abi Rabah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Aisha the truthful (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: Tell me of the most wondrous thing you have seen concerning the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Which of his states are you asking about? Every one of his states was wondrous. But I will relate one wondrous incident: One night the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Aisha, leave me, so that this night I may worship my Lord." I said, "(O Messenger of Allah) I love to be near you, yet also whatever pleases you." So he rose, performed ablution and stood to pray. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: He began to weep continuously, until he wetted his lap (with tears). Then she says: He kept weeping while seated (in prayer) until he wetted his beard. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Then he kept weeping until he even wetted the ground. Meanwhile Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to call him for the (Fajr) prayer. When he saw the Prophet weeping he said: O Messenger of Allah! You weep, though Allah has forgiven you all your former and latter sins? He replied: "Should I then not be a grateful servant? Tonight a verse has been revealed upon me: 'Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth... for people of understanding.'" Then he said: "Woe to the one who recites this verse and does not reflect upon it."
Every Muslim ought to reflect deeply, to the extent of his own intellect and insight, upon the meaning and purport of this verse, the vastness and depth of its subject, and its demands.
The excellence of the final verses of Surah Aal-e-Imran is also known from this hadith. Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Whoever recites the final verses of Aal-e-Imran on any night, the reward of a whole night's prayer is written for him. (as reported by Darimi)
This final ruku (section) of Surah Aal-e-Imran, like the final ruku of Surah al-Baqarah, comprises a most comprehensive supplication, and probably the secret of this ruku's excellence lies precisely in these supplicatory verses. From the tongues of servants who reflect upon the creation of the universe and who remember Allah in every state, this comprehensive supplication has been made in this ruku thus: "Our Lord, You did not create this in vain... Indeed, You do not break Your promise." (191-194)
This supplication of the final ruku of Surah Aal-e-Imran is among the most comprehensive supplications of the Glorious Qur'an.
