English translation
Hazrat Mustawrid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever eats a morsel at the expense of a Muslim, Allah will feed him a like morsel of Hell; and whoever wears a garment by mentioning the fault of a Muslim, Allah will clothe him with a like garment of Hell; and whoever brings some person, or on account of someone brings a person, to a position of ostentation and public exposure, Allah will make him stand on the Day of Resurrection at a place where he will be thoroughly disgraced.” (Abu Dawud)

I once read that during the caliphate of Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) a man travelled from some far-off region and reached Madinah Munawwarah and came into his presence. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: you have come covering such a long distance — tell me, how did you find the Muslims? The man replied: like the sons of a single mother! This is the power and effect of Islam, that even a stranger comes to know that this nation is bound in some unseen bond that has made them one, like brothers.
Among the reasons a new Muslim gave for accepting Islam is an incident in a bazaar of the city of Cairo in Egypt, where he saw a vegetable seller get up and go off for some need, telling the neighbouring vegetable seller to keep an eye on his shop. By chance a man came to the empty shop to buy vegetables. The neighbouring seller rose from his own shop, came to the empty shop, dealt with the customer just as if it were his own shop, gave him the goods, took the money from him and put it in that same shop, and returned to his own shop. This new Muslim — who had not yet become a Muslim at that time — asked the shopkeeper: why did you not call him over to your own shop? The reply came: he was that man’s customer; how could I call him to my own shop! And to Allah be praise. This was the character that is beyond the imagination of today’s Muslim, who has forgotten everything in the pursuit of his own interest, his own self, his own gain and his own world. He has forgotten that good or evil does not stop at its own place; whatever we wish for another can also befall us, if not today then tomorrow.
The meaning of this hadith is that if anyone obtains some benefit by violating a Muslim’s right, by taking advantage of some weakness or need of his, or by causing a Muslim harm, then in reality he has eaten a morsel of Hell. This includes those who take bribes, those who amass money through deceit and fraud, those who hoard, those who adulterate, the killers who sell expired medicines, and those who carry out substandard construction.
Likewise, if someone obtains wealth by defaming a Muslim, wins an election, or gains some award, he too deserves the garment of Hell and is fit to burn in fire and embers. This includes those newspaper people who play with people’s honour through false news in order to increase their newspaper’s circulation. Similarly, whoever gains fame by causing a Muslim harm, and proves his own goodness by mentioning another’s evil, will on the Day of Resurrection receive the worst punishment and be made notorious among all people.
In a hadith the Master of both worlds (peace be upon him) said that for every Muslim, the wealth of a Muslim, his honour and dignity, and his blood are forbidden; and it is enough evil in a person that he holds his Muslim brother in contempt. (Abu Dawud)
