English translation
The Mother of the Believers, Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), says: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fast consecutively only in two months — Sha'ban and Ramadan."
Sha'ban is the month before Ramadan, and according to the Islamic calendar it is the eighth month of the year, and this month lies between the two great months of the year — that is, between Rajab and Ramadan — concerning which it comes in a narration as follows: People are heedless of the merit of this month lying between Rajab and Ramadan, whereas in this month the deeds of people are presented before Allah; therefore I love that my deeds be presented before Allah while I am in the state of fasting. (Reported by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i)
The month of Ramadan is indeed the most excellent month; the month of Rajab too is one of the four venerable months — Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab — which was greatly honoured even before Islam; and Sha'ban lies between these two blessed months. Sha'ban itself also has numerous merits — so much so that Tirmidhi and Bayhaqi have narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) this saying of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): that after Ramadan the best fasts are those of Sha'ban kept in honour of Ramadan (and in preparation for it). For this reason the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wished that people should by no means pass this month in heedlessness; and just as the sunnah prayers before the obligatory prayer have a special effect in making a person's heart familiar with the prayer and bringing him close to the spiritual realm, so the fasts of Sha'ban have the same relation to the obligatory fasts of Ramadan.
In another narration it comes that the Mother of the Believers, A'ishah as-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her), asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah! Do you prefer the month of Sha'ban above all months for fasting?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In this month Allah writes (the decree of) all those who will die that year; I love that when my time comes, I should be fasting." (Reported by al-Mundhiri). What is established from the reliable books of hadith is that a special state would come over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the month of Sha'ban even before the arrival of Ramadan. Ramadan is the month in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was appointed by Allah to the tremendous office of prophethood, and the revelation of an immortal Book like the Holy Qur'an began. For this reason, not only would the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) worship extraordinarily in Ramadan, but even before it his special yearning for Allah would begin. Concerning the fasts of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the month of Sha'ban there are various narrations, from which the scholars of hadith understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to fast most days of this month, and it is also possible that in some years he fasted the whole of Sha'ban and in some years missed a few days. But this practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was special to his own person and was on account of the deep spiritual connection he had with the month of the Qur'an's revelation. As for the general Muslims, he had instructed them not to fast in the last fifteen days of the month of Sha'ban. (Reported by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah). This was out of the fear that if people began to fast diligently in the last days of this month, it would gradually become a compulsory custom, and ten or fifteen extra fasts would be needlessly added to the obligatory fasts of Ramadan, and thus a burden would fall upon the people that Allah has not placed upon them. In the early period, those who understood the spirit of the Muhammadan Shariah adhered strictly to this principle, and whatever act the Shariah had not made obligatory but which appeared to be becoming a compulsory custom, they immediately cut off at the root. They knew how an act that is begun with great good intention, regarded as an act of virtue and reward, gradually becomes first a sunnah, then obligatory and prescribed, and finally even more important than the obligatory duties, and how, out of ignorance, people mix many evils together with that virtue and turn it into a thoroughly detestable custom. Therefore we should all, understanding these principles laid down by the Shariah, abandon mere customs and act upon the commands of the Qur'an and Sunnah, which are the means of salvation and the means of intercession.
