English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that once, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), a man came to him and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! I am ruined (that is, I have done a deed that has ruined and destroyed me). He (peace be upon him) said: what has happened? The man said: I had intercourse with my wife while I was fasting (in another narration it is that this was an incident of Ramadan). He (peace be upon him) said: do you have, in your possession, a slave whom you can free as an expiation for this fault? The man said: no. He (peace be upon him) said: then can you fast for two consecutive months? He said: this too is beyond my capacity. He (peace be upon him) said: then do you have enough to feed sixty poor people? He said: I have no power for that either. He (peace be upon him) said: then sit (perhaps Allah will provide some means for you). Abu Hurayrah says: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was still seated there and we were also present there, when a very large basket of dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) called out: where is the one who was asking the question? The man said: I am here. He (peace be upon him) said: give this basket in charity (on your own behalf). He said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Should I give charity to such needy people who are more in need than I am? By Allah! Between the two stony tracts of Medina (that is, in all the dwellings of Medina) there is no household more needy than my family. At this word of his, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed (contrary to his custom) so that the teeth at both the right and left sides (the canines) also became visible (although his blessed habit was only to smile). Then he (peace be upon him) said to the man: well, then feed these dates to your own family.

The basic and legal existence of the fast depends on three things: from true dawn until the setting of the sun nothing is to be eaten, nothing is to be drunk, and sexual desire is not to be satisfied. These three things are the most desired by the self, and in the fast a restriction is placed upon these very three desires. A person who, for consecutive days, restrains for a considerable length of time even these strongest and most restless desires of his self, is expected to be able to keep his other desires under control all the more easily. In reality the fast produces within a person the full power to control his self and all its desires; a power by gaining which he can well cope with all the resistances of the self and Satan in following the religion and obeying the divine commands. That is, in the true sense he becomes a God-fearing and pious human being.

If a person, while fasting, deliberately disregards these three desires (which are among the basic requirements of the fast) and deliberately commits any of these acts, then his fast is broken. Then its expiation (kaffara) becomes obligatory, which is like the expiation for zihar. (To call one's wife 'mother' is zihar. Then, until he pays the expiation, it is forbidden for him to touch that wife; however, the marriage is not dissolved.) These are the limits set by Allah. Regarding the expiation for zihar, it comes in the Holy Quran thus:

"Those who make zihar to their wives and then wish to go back on what they said, must free a slave before they touch one another. This is what you are admonished with, and Allah is well aware of what you do. And whoever does not find a slave must fast for two consecutive months before they touch one another, and whoever is not able to do that must feed sixty poor people." (Al-Mujadalah: 3-4)

From this noble hadith it should be well understood that if a person breaks a fast of Ramadan without a lawful excuse, then he will have to pay the expiation; and if a person breaks a fast of Ramadan in such a state that he can neither at present free a slave, nor fast two consecutive months, nor, on account of poverty and destitution, feed sixty poor people, then the expiation remains obligatory upon him. He should keep the intention of paying it, and whenever he becomes able, he should discharge it. And Allah knows best!
