English translation
Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), command me to do some deed by which Allah may benefit me. He (peace be upon him) said: "Keep the fast, for there is no deed like it."

Among the righteous deeds such as prayer, fasting, charity, Hajj and serving the creation of Allah, despite their sharing this quality that they are all a means and a way of drawing near to Allah, each of them also has some particular effects and special features by which they are distinguished and unique from one another. In view of these individual and distinctive features, it can be said of each one of them that there is no deed like it; for example, in respect of subduing the self and suppressing its desires it can be said that in this quality no other deed is like fasting. Likewise, people's circumstances also differ, so a single deed cannot be called the best for everyone. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) declared the best deed for Abu Umamah to be fasting, which in his particular circumstances was more beneficial for him. In another narration it comes thus, that whoever keeps a single day's fast (even merely) to please Allah will be taken so far from Hell as a young crow flies and, flying on and on, grows very old and dies. (Reported by Bayhaqi and Tabarani.) The crow has a special mastery in flying continuously and covering distances, and its lifespan is far greater than that of ordinary birds; if, from the moment it becomes able to fly, it were to set off in one direction, then imagine how great a distance it would cover flying throughout its whole life. What is really meant by this is that the servant becomes very far from Hell and very near to Allah's pleasure, and becomes deserving of His rewards and honours.

In another narration it comes thus, that if a person who keeps a single voluntary fast were given the whole earth filled with gold, even then his reward would not be complete; on the Day of Recompense his reward simply cannot be given to him in full beforehand. (Reported by Tabarani and Mundhiri.) This noble hadith points, on the one hand, to the narrowness of the world, and on the other to the mercy and appreciation of Allah. This was the matter of voluntary fasts; now consider a little what the status of the obligatory fasts of Ramadan will be, and what the matter of abandoning them will be. This can be gauged from this noble hadith. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I was sleeping when two men came to me (who were in reality angels); they took me by the arm and brought me to a rugged mountain and said, climb up. I said, I cannot climb such a mountain. They said, we will make the way smooth for you. So when I reached the top of the mountain, I heard there very loud cries. I asked, what are these cries? They said, these are the screams and wails of the people of Hell. Then they took me on ahead, and as we went, what do I see but that some people are hanging upside down, bound by their heels, their jaws slit so that blood is flowing from them. I asked, who are these people? The angel said, these are the people who break their fast before its time. (Reported by Mustadrak of Hakim.) In another narration it comes thus, that whoever does not please Allah even in Ramadan is truly wretched. (Sahih Ibn Hibban.)

On another occasion he (peace be upon him) said: no month better than Ramadan comes upon the Muslims, and none worse than it upon the hypocrites. (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah.)

Consider that, on the one hand, how many are the excellences of fasting, and on the other, this is the punishment of one who breaks the fast before its time, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) witnessed on the night of the Ascension; so what will the punishment be of those who do not fast at all? By merely reflecting and paying attention to this much, the whole reality can be understood, provided the mind is capable of thinking and the heart has not already become dead.
