English translation
Abu Wahb al-Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Name yourselves after the names of the prophets, and the best names in the sight of Allah Almighty are Abdullah and Abdur Rahman. Moreover, the truest names are Harith and Hammam, and the worst names are Harb and Murrah.”
The religion of Islam attaches great importance, in the matter of children's names, to giving a meaningful name. The importance of a name lies also in this, that it indicates a person's character. A name is a reflection of a person's religion and creed. Therefore, before naming your child, do consider carefully that it will become a part of his personality, to the extent that it will go with him into the grave — indeed, even afterwards it will be the means of his identification. Harith means one who earns and one who resolves and intends. Likewise Hammam is derived from hamm, whose meaning is resolve and intention. It is obvious that no person is devoid of earning and gain, or of resolve and intention; for this reason, in respect of meaning and sense, these names have been declared the truest. Harb and Murrah have been called the worst names in this respect, that harb means fighting and war, and it is obvious that war is a very bad thing, in which there is loss and ruin. Likewise murrah means bitterness or acridity, which the temperament finds disagreeable. For this very reason such names are disliked whose meaning comes out badly. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to change such names (as reported in Muslim). In a narration of Sahih Muslim it comes in this way, that on the Day of Judgement the worst person in the sight of Allah Almighty will be the one who is given the name “king of kings”. Remember, there is no king except Allah.
Concerning names, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his community many things. One saying of the Messenger is: “On the Day of Judgement you will be called by your own names and by the names of your fathers; therefore give yourselves good names.” (Abu Dawud) A name may also be shortened, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Hazrat A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) by the name 'A'ish (Bukhari). Names of affection and endearment are also permitted, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) “Humayra” (al-Hadith). However, to distort a name is not right, especially those names which are based on the names of Allah Almighty. Because this ailment is common in our society, the venerable scholars say this regarding the names of Allah: give the child one name after a name of Allah, but add some other name as well for calling him ordinarily. For example, if the name Abdullah has been given, then add Hasan alongside it and call him by the name Hasan.
The venerable scholars also forbid such names in which 'abd (that is, servant) is attributed to a servant. In Sahih Muslim it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Let none of you say 'my 'abd' (meaning my servant) or 'my amah' (meaning my maidservant), because in reality all the men among you are the servants ('abd) of Allah, and likewise all the women are His maidservants. Yes, instead of that you may use the word (of bondage) — my slave and my slave-girl.” This is because the word 'abd comes in the sense of both servant and slave, but this 'abd carries a very great belief and relation, which in the true sense subsists with one Being alone, and it should not be robbed of meaning by using it out of place.
One more thing that is current in our society, and is in reality against the religion, is that names are drawn out by means of divination, geomancy, astrology, numerology and the like. A person's life is free of the stars, of lines and of numbers; it is in the grip of the true Master. All these absurdities are invitations to the wrath of Allah. To keep away from them is the duty of every believer.
