English translation
Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Save yourselves from the Fire, even if it be by means of a piece of a date.”
Among the qualities of the believers described in the Holy Qur’an is that they spend in the way of Allah. In many verses and in various ways Allah Almighty has declared in the Noble Qur’an that all this earth and the heavens, and whatever is in this universe, belong to Allah alone. He is its Owner, and He gives of His wealth to whomever He wills and as much as He wills. In the same way He has reminded people that there was a time when you did not exist and this wealth was in the possession of your forefathers. Today you are its owners, and on a day to come Allah Almighty will remove you from here and seat someone else in your place. So do not treat it as your permanent property and do as you please with it. Allah Almighty says:
“And spend out of that wealth in which He has made you successors of others.” (Al-Hadid 7)
Then to those whom He has granted wealth and riches He gives this command: “And give them from the wealth which Allah has bestowed upon you.” (An-Nur 33)
In another place He says: “What is the matter with you that you do not spend in the way of Allah, although in the end the heavens and the earth (and whatever is in them) will remain Allah’s alone?” (Al-Hadid 10)
The particular point to which attention is drawn in this blessed hadith is that in order to attain the merits of charity and almsgiving it is not necessary that a large amount of wealth be spent; rather every person can attain this merit by giving charity according to his own financial standing. With Allah Almighty the real worth and value lies in sincerity. Even the smallest amount given with sincerity is accepted by Allah Almighty, and upon it all the merits of charity may be obtained, as is known from this blessed hadith. That is, if a person has nothing else to give in charity and he gives even a piece of a date to someone in need, he may obtain the reward of charity by it, and it can become a means of the forgiveness of sins.
As another narration states: whoever among you has the means to save himself from the Fire, even if it be by means of half a date, he must certainly save himself (reported in Musnad Ahmad). Just as, in the time of fierce sunshine, a person must protect his face from the heat and, if he finds nothing else, at least holds the shade of his own hand over his face — in exactly the same way charity and almsgiving are a shade and a shelter from the heat of Hell. Let everyone arrange such shade for himself as far as lies within his power.
From this blessed hadith it becomes clearly known that those whose financial condition is weak should not consider themselves deprived of the reward of charity. Rather, by spending even the least amount according to their means, they too can become partners in this blessing. Another narration states that charity causes no decrease in wealth (reported in Muslim). To spend some portion of one’s wealth in the way of Allah Almighty appears outwardly to be a loss and decrease in wealth, but in reality charity and almsgiving are a cause of increase in wealth, because blessing is granted in the wealth of the one who gives charity, and his wealth is kept safe from calamity and misfortune, and the reward in his record of deeds increases. Indeed, even in this world he is given such a recompense that his wealth keeps growing. Another narration states that charity most certainly cools the wrath of the Lord and drives away an evil death (reported in Tirmidhi).
Therefore, after all these merits, every person ought to set aside a particular portion of his monthly income for this purpose in keeping with his financial circumstances, so that this means of earning reward and merit continues permanently. It is not necessary that everyone set aside a large portion for it. Let him fix whatever smallest portion he can according to his circumstances. God willing, in that too there is nothing but good. One benefit of doing this is that a person keeps alive the awareness of spending in the way of Allah.
