English translation
‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The one who brings goods from one city to another is granted sustenance, and the one who withholds goods (with the intention of selling them at a higher price) is accursed.” (Ibn Majah)

There is not the slightest room for doubt that in the whole world there is no better occupation than trade. The material, spiritual, religious and worldly benefits that a trader has at all times are not granted to anyone else. It is so fertile an occupation that wealth and trade are taken to mean the same thing. If a salaried employee intends to increase his income, he generally has to resort to unlawful means or to work beyond his own strength. But a trader increases his work, and with his work his income, night and day, while he neither needs to break any rule nor does any religious sin fall upon him. The wealth a person can obtain through trade is not possible by any other means. In the Holy Qur’an too Allah, the Lord of Might, has provided guidance for Muslims from this aspect. The Lord of Might says:

“Allah has made trade lawful and has made dealing in interest unlawful.” (Al-Baqarah)

In Surah An-Nisa it comes:

“O you who believe! Do not consume one another’s wealth among yourselves by unlawful means, except that it be trade by mutual consent.”

Through trade not only is wealth obtained; another thing is also gained which is in no way less than wealth — and that is freedom. A trader is not compelled to trample on his own will, his own wishes and his conscience, nor to hand his life over into the control of others. He has no need in this world for undue flattery and fawning.

The Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم himself was a successful trader before he took up the burden of prophethood. Among the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) too the occupation of trade was common — indeed, the people of Makkah were mostly traders. That Sayyiduna ‘Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was a trader is well known and famous; other eminent Companions too were attached to the occupation of trade. Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was a very great trader, and because of his engagement in trade he did not get the opportunity to attend the Prophet’s court very often. That is why very few ahadith are found from his narration. He himself said that the ahadith of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم remained hidden from him because he was much occupied in the business of trade. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) traded in cloth. ‘Abd al-Rahman bin ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was a very great merchant. Imam al-A‘zam Abu Hanifah (may Allah have mercy on him) traded in cloth. Concerning Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) too it comes that he was a trader in cloth.

One great benefit of trade — and certainly the most precious of all — is this: that whatever a truthful, trustworthy trader earns while keeping to the correct principles of trade is entirely pure and lawful, which benefits him in this world too and will make him successful in the Hereafter as well.

The benefit of trade is not confined to the trader alone; rather, through the person of a single trader many people are freed from anxiety over their livelihood. When a house is built, a factory is opened, a business is started, workers are necessarily required for it, and in this way a means of livelihood comes into being for many people, by which many families are fed.

Those nations and countries that are heedless of the development of trade in reality become dependent on others and beholden to them, to the point that they must even put the yoke of slavery around their necks. The war of today too is a war of trade, in which powerful countries, in order to promote their own trade, wish to make war on another country, occupy it, and increase their trade.
