English translation
It is narrated from Safwan bin Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with him) that someone said to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم: “Can a believer be a coward?” He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Yes.” Then it was asked: “Can a believer be a miser?” He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Yes.” Then it was asked: “Can a believer be a liar?” He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “No.” (Muwatta of Imam Malik)

Lying means false speech, and it is an utterly evil act. Whoever has this bad habit in him is very evil in the sight of Allah and of people, and no reliance can be placed upon him. Its evil has been mentioned a great deal in the Qur’an and Hadith. Allah, the Lord of Might, says:

“Indeed Allah does not guide the one who is a liar and ungrateful.” (Az-Zumar 3)

From the above hadith it is learnt that faith and lying are two entirely separate things, and it is impossible for the two to be gathered together at once. This is also supported by the noble hadith in which the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that faith and disbelief cannot be gathered together in anyone’s heart: if there is disbelief there is no faith, and if there is faith there is no disbelief. And lying and truth too cannot be gathered together, nor can treachery and trustworthiness be gathered together. (Ahmad)

In one noble hadith it comes that a man came into the presence of the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: O Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, what is the deed that takes one into Paradise? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Speaking the truth. When a servant speaks the truth he does deeds of goodness, and whoever does deeds of goodness becomes filled with faith; and whoever becomes filled with faith enters Paradise. That man then asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is the deed that takes one into Hell? He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: Telling lies. When a servant tells lies he will do deeds of sin, and when he does deeds of sin he will fall into disbelief, and whoever falls into disbelief will go into Hell. (Musnad Ahmad) From this hadith it is learnt that lying brings a person all the way to disbelief, than which there is no other thing more evil, and for which there is no door of salvation.

Lying has many forms. One of them is that which is spoken in idle talk and in jest. Outwardly it harms no one, but Islam has forbidden even this. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said that there is a painful punishment for the person who lies merely to make people laugh. (Abu Dawud)

One form of lying is that parents make false promises to a small child in order to coax him, thinking that the child will forget those promises in a little while — and often that is indeed what happens. But Islam has not permitted even this kind of lie; otherwise the evil of lying will depart from the child’s heart.

Today the evil of this hateful deed has gone out of our hearts altogether. Lying is rampant everywhere. Today the clever one is he who lies, and the greatest fool is he who keeps the lamp of truth alight. Today children are trained in lying in our homes. Here they are, sitting at home themselves, and if a telephone call comes or some acquaintance arrives at the house, an innocent child is told to say that his father is not at home. When that child grows up and tries this very weapon on his parents, then what is there to weep about, and what justification remains for complaint and grievance? What is sown is exactly what is reaped. When a father seats his son in the shop, he trains him in lying as the very first lesson, so that the son makes no mistake in deceiving the customer. Then when this shopkeeper himself becomes a customer somewhere and is deceived, how can it be right for him to be angry about it and to speak ill?
