English translation
Abu Rafi‘ narrates from his father: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) give the call to prayer in the ear of Hasan ibn Ali when Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave birth to him.
The religion of Islam is complete and comprehensive in its teachings. It contains guidance for every stage of life, and it is a favour of Allah, the Lord of Glory, that He has granted us guidance in every matter. The rulings of the religion concerning a newborn after its birth are likewise perfectly clear.
Whether the newborn is a boy or a girl, both alike are a blessing from Allah. Islam permits no distinction in this matter. A person should rejoice at this blessing of Allah and should give thanks to Allah with full joy and contentment. Likewise the relatives and friends of the one in whose home a child has been born should also express their happiness, express good wishes, and pray for the newborn. Rejoicing of this kind is not against the religion; rather it is recommended, for through it love and harmony among people in society are strengthened. In the same way, if someone shares in your happiness on such an occasion, value it, and if you are able, offer them hospitality as well — but do all of this while avoiding extravagance, wastefulness and ostentation.
Among the rulings Islam has given regarding the birth of a child is that the call to prayer should be given in the child's right ear. This should be done immediately after the birth, once the newborn has been bathed. The wisdom in it, as the noble scholars have explained, is that Satan flees from the words of the adhan, and so the newborn is protected from his mischief. There is this benefit in it too: that as soon as the child comes into this world he hears the call to the belief in the oneness of Allah, the belief in prophethood, and to prayer. In this way he is made aware of the call of the Most Merciful before the call of Satan.
Besides this, there is also the ruling regarding a boy that he should be circumcised. According to a hadith, circumcision is part of human nature (Bukhari). It is better that circumcision be done at an early age, and better still if it is done on the seventh day, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) had the circumcision of Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) performed on the seventh day (Tabarani).
Another practice at the birth of a child, which nowadays is almost non-existent, is the giving of the ghutti. In Arabic it is called tahnik. In this connection it is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a child was born in his house he took him to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) named him Ibrahim, gave him the tahnik with a date, and prayed for good for him. Another narration of Bukhari shows that at the birth of the son of Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) the Prophet (peace be upon him) chewed a date and then took it from his blessed mouth and placed it in the mouth of the newborn. The view of the noble scholars regarding the tahnik is that if a date is available it is far better, and it should be chewed enough for the newborn to swallow it easily. If a date is not available, then whatever sweet thing can be obtained should be used for the tahnik.
The one who gives the tahnik should be a righteous person, and if the child has to be taken to him for this purpose there is no harm in it. From the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (may Allah be pleased with him) it is also established that a child may be taken out of the house immediately after its birth. The custom in some households of not taking the child out of the house for forty days is shown by this hadith to be baseless. The one giving the tahnik should also pray for goodness and blessing for the child.
May Allah grant us all the ability to act upon these sunnahs. Amin.
