English translation
Jabir ibn Samurah narrates from the Prophet (peace be upon him): "That a man should teach his child good manners is better for him than to give a sa' in charity."
Righteous and virtuous children are a means of reward for a person even after his death. But in order to attain this excellence, a person must bring up his children in such a way that they become a cause of his success in the Hereafter. Every person who wishes to succeed in the Hereafter must raise his children according to the law of Islam. He should accustom them to the religion and to acting upon it, so that he may save himself from the Fire of Hell and save his family from it too. Allah Most High says:
"O you who believe, save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones." (al-Tahrim 6)
In the matter of this upbringing, the religion permits no difference whatsoever between a boy and a girl. Rather, the education and upbringing of a daughter is a means of even greater reward than that of a son, because a girl's lap will in the future have the standing of a school. It is a good mother who prepares a good nation.
There are many sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) concerning the upbringing of children. He said that no father has given his son a better gift than good manners (Tirmidhi). The Prophet (peace be upon him) also taught that the first thing you should teach your children is the words "La ilaha illa Allah" (Bayhaqi). Likewise he commanded that children be made to follow the commands of Allah and be restrained from disobedience (al-Hadith). Also within the scope of upbringing is his command that you order your children to pray when they reach seven years of age, and strike them if they do not pray; and when they reach ten years, separate their bedding (Abu Dawud). Another noble hadith states: teach your children three things — love of your Prophet (peace be upon him), love of his household, and the recitation of the Noble Qur'an (Tabarani). "Learn archery and horsemanship" (Tirmidhi). Similarly, in one narration there is encouragement to learn swimming (Tabarani). One narration says: avoid a life of luxury (pleasures and comforts beyond need), for the servants of Allah do not indulge in luxury (Ahmad). It is obvious that one who always lives in luxury will fall behind in both religion and worldly matters. Attention has been drawn to effort, striving and high ambition in this way: "Be eager for that which benefits you, and keep seeking help from Allah, and do not become helpless" (Muslim). Likewise, in the matter of raising children the Prophet (peace be upon him) also drew attention to watching over them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that a person follows the way of his friend, so let each of you look at whom he is befriending (Tirmidhi). Those who have reached the age of maturity especially need to be watched over, so that it is known what kind of company the child keeps, for a person will be with the one he loves, and for him is what he has earned (Tirmidhi).
Raising children is not a part-time task; it is a responsibility of every moment. It is a means of honour for us in this world, and God willing we shall receive its full reward in the Hereafter too. In this regard we should all keep in mind that raising a child requires the utmost warmth and forbearance. Without wearying of his mistakes, one should appreciate what he does well while correcting his failings, and in this matter one should employ methods other than striking as far as possible.
