English translation
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The likeness of the hypocrite is that of a sheep wandering between two flocks — turning once towards this one and once towards that one.”

In terms of thought and conduct there are only two parties to be found in this world: the party of Allah and the party of Satan. There is also a third group which is in reality a part of “the party of Satan” (ḥizb al-shayṭān), yet outwardly puts on the cloak of Islam. Such a person, along with being a confirmed disbeliever, is cowardly, spiteful, self-seeking and utterly selfish — and this is the group of the hypocrites. In their own estimation this group tries to deceive Allah and the believers. That is why Allah has appointed for them a punishment even greater than that of the disbelievers, for the open disbeliever can be dealt with and confronted, and so no one can be deceived in his case; but those who are disbelievers and yet wrap themselves in the cloak of Islam are extremely difficult to judge. Allah says:

“Be certain that the hypocrites will be in the lowest depth of the Fire, and you will find no helper for them.” (al-Nisā’, 145)

Hypocrisy is of two kinds. The first is hypocrisy of faith and belief, and this is the real and true hypocrisy. Such a hypocrite does not accept Islam in his heart but professes with his tongue to be a Muslim while concealing disbelief and enmity in his heart. This hypocrisy is the very worst kind of disbelief. In the time of the Messenger ﷺ there was a group of such hypocrites who were constantly striving to harm Islam and the Muslims.

The second kind of hypocrisy is hypocrisy of character and conduct. This is not disbelief, but it is transgression (fisq), because it involves disobedience to the Sacred Law of Allah and to the rulings of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is about such hypocrites that the Messenger ﷺ said: “There are four traits: whoever has all four of them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has one trait of hypocrisy in him until he gives it up. Those four traits are: (1) when something is entrusted to him he betrays the trust; (2) when he speaks he lies; (3) when he makes an agreement he breaks it; and (4) when he quarrels with anyone he abuses him.” (Bukhārī and Muslim) In the Noble Qur’an the word nifāq and the words derived from it occur thirty-seven times. So much mention of hypocrisy is clear proof that the presence of hypocrites is extremely dangerous for Muslim society and for the Islamic order.

In this blessed hadith the hypocrite is likened to a sheep that wanders here and there in search of its ram. Such is the state of the hypocrite: since his only aim is worldly gain, rank, and the protection of his wealth and life, he takes on that same nature and sometimes comes to shelter in the embrace of the Muslims and sometimes goes over to the camp of the disbelievers to secure his purpose. Such people will do anything for their personal advantage, and — God forbid — if they come to power they sell out the whole nation. Ja‘far and Ṣādiq are examples of this.

To create a hatred of hypocrisy, this parable of the Messenger ﷺ is truly most effective. May Allah, by His grace and favour, keep us safe from the evil of the hypocrites, who are the worst enemies of the religion of Islam and who go even further than the disbelievers in harming the Muslims. May Allah destroy them; rather, may He uproot them entirely. Āmīn! Indeed Allah alone is our Guardian, and He alone has power over that.
