English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once asked the Companions, "Do you know who the bankrupt one is?" They said, "We consider the bankrupt one to be he who has neither dirham nor goods and possessions." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed the bankrupt of my Ummah is he who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting and zakat, but will come having abused this one, slandered that one, devoured the wealth of one, shed the blood of another, and struck someone. So his good deeds will be given — some to this one and some to that one — and if his good deeds run out before the rights he owes are settled, then the sins of those people will be cast upon him, and he will be thrown into the Fire."

From this hadith we should gauge the importance of the rights owed to people (huquq al-'ibad), and how grave a matter it is to fail to fulfil them. In reality, today we have taken the rights of the religion — which are the rights of Allah — to be the whole of religion, limiting it merely to acts of worship, litanies and glorification, while the rights owed to fellow people we have excluded altogether from Allah's religion. This blessed hadith also makes clear to us all who the true bankrupt is: the one who will arrive in the Hereafter with heaps of worship but having usurped the rights of people. Clearly the reckoning there will not be settled with money, for the currency there is good deeds; so those he wronged in the world and whose rights he trampled will take away his good deeds, and when those heaps of worship are exhausted and claimants still remain, the sins of the claimants recorded in their books will be entered into this person's account. Thus he came with heaps of good deeds, but because of his failure to fulfil the rights of people he had to part with his good deeds, and along with that the sins of others were hung around his neck, and the Fire became his abode. How much better it would be if we each examined ourselves to make sure we owe no one their rights — so if there are financial rights, we discharge them, and if we have hurt someone's heart, we seek their forgiveness. May Allah grant us all the ability to fulfil the rights of His servants (Ameen).
