English translation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Indeed Allah is well pleased with the servant who, when he eats, gives thanks to Allah for it, and when he drinks, praises Allah for it." (Muslim)
Eating and drinking, in which lies the satisfaction of a person's hunger and the pleasure of the palate — if one says "Bismillah" before eating and drinking and offers praise and thanks to Allah at the end of it, then this outwardly purely material act and human need becomes a spiritual act of worship, taking on the colour of devotion to God. In reality, every act done in accordance with Allah's command and the teaching of the Sharia, for the sake of Allah's pleasure and in the hope of the reward of following the Sunnah of the Prophet, is itself worship; and this intention turns every act into worship. When this spirit departs, every act of worship becomes mere habit, empty ritual and the following of one's own desires. Thus, with sincerity of intention and the intention of following the Sunnah, even eating and drinking will — Allah willing — become a means of salvation.
