English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honour his guest; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not harm his neighbour; and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say what is good or remain silent." (Bukhari)
In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded three things: first, that the guest be honoured; second, that the neighbour be not harmed; third, that one say what is good or remain silent.
The wording the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose in this hadith is meant to draw attention to the life of a believer. Had he wished, he could have said, "Do such and such," but instead he said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him do such and such" — that is, these are deeds for the people of faith, and they are the special qualities of a believer. Whoever has the wealth of faith and certainty in his heart will honour and show respect to his guest, will surely guard the rights of his neighbour, and will not misuse his tongue: he will either speak words of good or keep silent. "Words of good" includes the remembrance of Allah, recitation of the Qur'an, blessings upon the Prophet, seeking forgiveness, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and religious teaching and instruction. From this blessed hadith it is learnt that one should keep the tongue engaged in words of good; but if a person does not have the resolve to keep his tongue engaged in words of good, then it is incumbent upon him to keep silent, for there are many dangers in speaking and silence is free of danger.
In another hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever keeps silent is saved (from many calamities and destructive things)."
From this blessed hadith the special merit of keeping silent is apparent. In reality it is a very great act: one who does not have the habit of speaking will be safe from every kind of evil speech, from backbiting and slander, from idle talk and futile speech. If one cannot use the tongue in good works, then one should hold fast to silence, for it is chiefly through the tongue that Satan gains mastery over a person; if someone keeps his tongue closed, he will be far safer from Satan's stratagems and assaults, and he will have Allah's help in carrying out religious affairs.
Whatever is spoken is accounted for, because Allah has appointed watchers over it; this speaking has its benefit and harm and its reward or punishment in this world and the Hereafter. So one should speak, after careful consideration, only to the extent needed, or else keep silent; and whatever one says should be lawful — and if the tongue is used for good, that is beyond praise. By keeping silent and guarding the tongue from evil speech, one is saved from many afflictions and attains deliverance, both in this world and the next, from many trials, losses and ruin; for the afflictions and calamities into which a person generally falls mostly reach him through the tongue.
The upshot is that, in every state and situation, keeping silent is better and a means of salvation, because the afflictions of the tongue are countless and it is very hard to be safe from them except by keeping the tongue closed. How well someone has said:
The tongue is tiny in size, but its sins are great and many.
