English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Whoever does not keep a single fast of Ramadan without a dispensation granted by Allah — then even the fasts of a whole lifetime, or of all time, will not be able to make up for it.” (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad and Sunan Darimi)
The month of Ramadan al-Mubarak is the springtime of Allah’s mercies. The special qualities Allah has granted this month, and the lights and blessings with which He has favoured it, cannot be exactly counted by man; therefore the acts of worship bound to this month have no substitute on other days.
Whatever work is done at its proper time has a beauty and excellence in it that, once the time has passed, cannot be brought about again no matter how hard one tries. The purport of this lofty saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is also this: that the blessed month of Ramadan is the season of Allah’s most special mercies and of His particular attention toward His servants — a time in which the whole Muslim ummah, and among them Allah’s righteous, pure-hearted and accepted servants, form a special bond with Allah. Whoever fulfils the special duty of such a precious time will certainly be doing something greatly worthy and blessed; and whoever, through his own heedlessness and negligence, loses this sure season will suffer an irreparable loss that he will not be able to make up even in a lifetime.
Allah is so Merciful and Generous that, where He prescribed this great act of worship as obligatory upon His servants, He also took special care of those servants of His who, on account of some lawful excuse, cannot fast in these days. The divine command is:
“Whoever among you witnesses this month should fast it; but whoever is ill or on a journey should complete the count in other days. Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you, and (He wants) that you complete the count and magnify Allah for having guided you, and that you may be grateful.” (Al-Baqarah 185)
In the light of this verse and the blessed hadith it is easily understood that whoever, without any lawful excuse, does not fast in the month of Ramadan al-Mubarak — since fasting is obligatory, the legal make-up now due upon him is a single day’s fast; but by this he can never attain the bounties, blessings and mercies he lost by abandoning the fast in this blessed month. So those who, out of carelessness, give up the fasts of Ramadan al-Mubarak should reflect on how much harm they do to themselves.
Yes, whoever gives up the fast on account of a lawful excuse, there is no sin upon him, and by making it up — Allah willing — there will be no diminishing of his reward with Allah; rather, in certain conditions — that is, where fasting is difficult, or under pressing circumstances it is hard or demanding to fast at that time, or because of the hardship of fasting there would be a shortcoming in the work of that moment, or one would not have the strength to carry out that work — in such circumstances it is better not to fast.
