English translation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that three men came to the houses of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and asked about his worship (that is, what his regular practice was regarding prayer, fasting, and other acts of worship). When they were told, it seemed that they considered it little, and they said among themselves, “What are we compared to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Allah has forgiven all his past and future shortcomings (and this has also been announced in the Qur'an), so he has no need of much extra worship and devotion; but we sinners do need it, so let us worship as much as we can.” So one of them said, “As for me, I shall now pray the whole night, always.” The second said, “I resolve to fast every day without break.” The third said, “I vow to keep away from women and never marry.” When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) learned of this, he came to them and said, “Are you the ones who said these things (and made such resolutions about yourselves)? Listen! By Allah, I am the most God-fearing of you all, yet my way is this: I fast and I do not fast; I pray at night and I also sleep; and I have not adopted celibacy — I marry women and live a married life with them. This is my way; whoever turns away from my way is not of me.”
The three Companions mentioned in this hadith apparently had the misunderstanding that the way to attain Allah's pleasure and to gain forgiveness and Paradise in the Hereafter is for a person to withdraw completely from the world and its pleasures and to remain engaged only in the worship of Allah. On this basis they assumed that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would be the same; but when they learned from his wives how little (by their own reckoning) his regular worship was, out of reverence they interpreted it to mean that forgiveness and lofty ranks in Paradise had already been decreed for him, so he had no need to occupy himself much in worship, whereas their own case was different and they had great need of it — and on this basis they made the resolutions mentioned in the blessed hadith. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) corrected their misunderstanding and admonished them by presenting his own example, saying that he feared Allah and was mindful of the Hereafter more than all of them, yet his way was that he prayed at night and also rested, fasted on some days and did not on others, and had wives with whom he lived a married life; this is the very way of life that he had brought as Prophet and Messenger from Allah, and whoever turns away from it and shuns it is not of him.
To be engaged solely in acts of worship and in remembrance and glorification is the state of the angels; Allah created them such that there is no demand of the self attached to them, and for them remembrance and worship are almost like the coming and going of breath is for us. But we children of Adam were created with many needs — eating and drinking, sleeping and waking, sitting and rising — and with many demands of the self, and through the Prophets (peace be upon them) we have been taught to worship Allah and, while observing the limits and rulings He has set, to fulfil our worldly needs and the demands of the self and to discharge mutual rights properly. This is a severe test; this is the way of the Prophets (peace be upon them) and in it lies perfection, and for this reason they are superior to the angels — and the best model among them is the beautiful example of the Seal of the Prophets, our master Muhammad al-Mustafa (peace be upon him). The purpose of the hadith is that the mindset and the outlook on which those three men based their decisions about themselves are wrong and contrary to the Muhammadan way. It would not be correct at all to conclude from this hadith that abundance of worship is something undesirable; rather it is monasticism and the monastic mindset that is undoubtedly undesirable and contrary to the Muhammadan way and the Muhammadan teaching.
