عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی فضیلت
حضرت ابو موسیٰ اشعری رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں اور میرا بھائی یمن سے (مدینہ منورہ) آئے تو یہاں (در نبوت پر) ایک عرصہ تک مقیم رہے۔ اس دوران ہم نے ہمیشہ یہ خیال کیا کہ عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے گھر والوں میں سے ایک آدمی ہیں کیونکہ ہم ان کو اور ان کی والدہ کو نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں وقت بے وقت آتے جاتے دیکھا کرتے تھے۔ (بخاری و مسلم)
ایک بار نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کہیں جا رہے تھے کہ راستے میں تھکن اور پیاس محسوس ہوئی۔ آپ دونوں حضرات ایک جگہ ٹھہر گئے۔ وہیں قریب ہی میں ایک بچہ بکریاں چرا رہا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس بچے سے فرمایا: “عزیزم، ان بکریوں کا دودھ پلا دو تا کہ پیاس بجھے۔” اس بچے نے جواب دیا: “میں تو ایسا نہیں کر سکتا۔ یہ بکریاں میری نہیں۔ میرے پاس تو امانت ہیں۔” یہ بچہ ام عبد کا بیٹا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ تھا۔ ان کی اس ایمانداری نے حضرت نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اور سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کو بے حد خوش کیا۔
اس واقعہ کے کچھ عرصے بعد حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے اسلام قبول کر لیا اور رسول اقدس صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں مصروف ہو گئے۔ اور پھر اس کے بعد حضرت عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں اس طرح رہے جس طرح سایہ انسان کے ساتھ رہتا ہے۔ ہر موقع اور ہر جگہ خدمت کی سعادت آپ کو نصیب ہوتی۔ جب نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آرام فرماتے تو عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ پاس ہی بیٹھے رہتے۔ جب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو غسل کرنا ہوتا تو عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فوراً آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے لیے پردے کا اہتمام کرتے۔ جب آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو گھر سے باہر جانا ہوتا تو عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ آپ کے جوتے آپ کے قدموں میں لا کر رکھتے۔ جب گھر تشریف لاتے تو عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ آگے بڑھ کر اپنے ہاتھوں سے حضور صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاؤں مبارک سے جوتے اتارتے۔ آپ کے لیے چھڑی اور مسواک ہر دم تیار رکھتے۔ ایک روایت میں آنا ہے کہ آنحضرت صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کو کہہ رکھا تھا کہ اگر تم دو ایک آدمی میرے پاس دیکھو تو اجازت طلب کیے بغیر آ جایا کرو۔
چونکہ حضرت عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کی تربیت رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے گھر میں ہوئی اس لیے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی سیرت و کردار کو اپنانے کا بھرپور موقع ملا۔ انہوں نے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا طرز عمل اختیار کیا اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی ہر عادت کو اپنے اندر سمونے کی کوشش کی۔ یہاں تک کہ یہ بات مشہور ہو گئی کہ حضرت عبداللہ ابن مسعود رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے قریب تر ہیں۔ حضرت حذیفہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ وقار، میانہ روی، اور راست روی میں رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سب سے زیادہ شباہت رکھنے والا آدمی ام عبد (یعنی حضرت عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) کا بیٹا ہے (بخاری)۔
حضرت عبداللہ ابن مسعود کو قرآن فہمی میں ایک خاص مقام حاصل تھا۔ وہ اپنے متعلق بیان کرتے ہیں: “اس اللہ کی قسم جس کے سوا کوئی معبود حقیقی نہیں، اس کے فضل و کرم سے مجھے قرآن مجید کی ہر آیت کے متعلق علم ہے کہ وہ کہاں نازل ہوئی، اور اس کا شان نزول کیا ہے۔ جب مجھے پتہ چلتا کہ فلاں شخص قرآن مجید کے بارے میں مجھ سے زیادہ معلومات رکھتا ہے تو میں اس کی خدمت میں حاضر ہو کر معلومات حاصل کرنے کی ہر ممکن کوشش کرتا۔”
نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے جن چار آدمیوں کے متعلق فرمایا کہ قرآن ان سے حاصل کرو عبداللہ ابن مسعود رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ان میں سے ایک ہیں۔
آپ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ صرف قاری، عالم، عابد اور زاہد ہی نہ تھے بلکہ چاک و چوبند اور بوقت ضرورت آگے بڑھ کر حملہ کرنے والے مجاہد بھی تھے۔ غالبا آپ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ رسول اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے علاوہ پہلے صحابی ہیں جنہوں نے مشرکین مکہ کے سامنے قرآن مجید کی بآواز بلند تلاوت کی۔

English translation
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My brother and I came from Yemen (to Madinah al-Munawwarah) and stayed here (at the door of Prophethood) for a considerable time. During that period we always thought that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was one of the household of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), because we used to see him and his mother coming and going in the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at all hours.
Once the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were going somewhere when on the way they felt fatigue and thirst. The two of them stopped at a place. Right there nearby a boy was grazing goats. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the boy: “My dear, give us some milk of these goats to drink, so that our thirst may be quenched.” The boy answered: “I cannot do that. These goats are not mine. They are only a trust in my keeping.” This boy was Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), the son of Umm 'Abd. This honesty of his greatly pleased the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Some time after this incident Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam and became occupied in the service of the Most Holy Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And thereafter Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) remained in the service of the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in the way that a shadow stays with a person. On every occasion and in every place the good fortune of service fell to his lot. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rested, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would sit right beside him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had to bathe, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would at once arrange a screen for him. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had to go out of the house, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would bring his sandals and place them at his feet. When he returned home, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would step forward and with his own hands remove the sandals from the blessed feet of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He kept the staff and the miswak ready for him at all times. In one narration it comes that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had told Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that if he saw one or two men with him, he might come in without seeking permission.
Since Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought up in the house of the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), he had the fullest opportunity to adopt his character and conduct. He took on the Prophet's manner of acting and tried to absorb every one of his habits within himself, to the point that it became well known that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was the closest of all to the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Hazrat Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that in dignity, moderation and uprightness the man who most resembled the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was the son of Umm 'Abd (that is, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him). Abdullah ibn Mas'ud held a special place in the understanding of the Qur'an. He says of himself: “By that Allah besides whom there is no true object of worship, by His grace and favour I have knowledge concerning every verse of the Glorious Qur'an — where it was revealed and what the occasion of its revelation was. Whenever I learned that such and such a person had more knowledge of the Glorious Qur'an than I, I would present myself before him and make every possible effort to acquire that knowledge.”
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is one of the four men concerning whom the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: learn the Qur'an from them.
He (may Allah be pleased with him) was not only a reciter, a scholar, a worshipper and an ascetic, but also alert and ready, and a warrior who, when the need arose, would advance and attack. He (may Allah be pleased with him) is probably the first Companion, apart from the Noble Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, who recited the Glorious Qur'an aloud before the polytheists of Makkah.
